I've just noticed the "Lotus summer program" advert showing next to "General Gassing" in the "Forum" column of the GASSING STATION main page. If that makes any sense?

This is a great way to put advertising in front of the users without the "getting in the way" popup. I actually followed the link because it interested me whereas any popups just get instantly bined (without reading) because they get in the way of what I choose to read first rather than just being bally minded. When I open a page the time it takes to open (and anything, which gets in the way of me seeing this) has a detrimental effect on my experience. Whereas, a small icon sitting waiting on the page for when my attention moves on from my initial goal is much more likely to generate a positive response. Also once the popup is gone there is no way back, whereas the icon will sit patiently on the page, politely waiting for my gaze to land upon it.
All in my humble opinion of coarse.
Just passing this on in the hope that it helps better the Pistonheads experience for the users, advertisers, and the Admin.

It's definitely better than that flipping Mazda advert. That pop up makes me want to NEVER buy a Mazda of any type, shape or size.

I'm trying to keep this positive as I hope it will be considered as a valid opinion rather than just getting pigeonholed as another whinge which it is not!

I think it's better than the pop-ups too.

Out of interest Ted, how many are you planning on putting up? Obviously the more there are the worse the page will look and the more diluted the click-through for the advertiser.

Not a bad effort Ted

However if you were to start using more of these then I think the Gassing Station page could start looking pretty messy unless you were able to settle on a consistant style - I think the "in association with Europa S" banner works best. The solid background of the Lotus Sport one may start to look messy if there are more of them.

It's an experiment. The feedback is useful, thanks.

Like all forms of advertising, I will try to limit it to ensure it remains effective.

Looks okay because there is only two or three adverts.

I think if every forum was sponsored it would look very messy.

One final thought, they are very dangerously close to avatars in my opinion.

Looks okay as long as it doesn't go OTT.

I fully agree with Leorest, although my favorite is the Lotus Sport one

I like the idea, it gives you the choice to view it or not which those damn pop ups do not.

Mirror everyone else opinion that too many would be ineffective too.

Please don't mention avatars - PH is hard enough to disguise at work as it is

I like it and we'll be advertising properly with you again shortly. Any more than half a dozen ads would make it look a real mess though
