Fuel-injected crossflow
Discussion
I'd say there is plenty to be gained vs carbs but a lot depends on the spec of the engine you are converting. I think you also have to consider the economics of it - an off the shelf kit is around £2k or more if you have to get someone to fit it and set it up for you. You can perhaps do it for half that if you put together a "bits and pieces" system (Megasquirt ECU, second hand TB's etc) but it's still going to be around a grand and you can buy and fit a low mileage 2.0L Zetec for less than that and get a whole heap more benefits that just having a fuel injected engine. You've got to wring the neck of a xflow to get 150BHP out of it but even a 1.8 Zetec can give this power with light mods and you'll get much more power lower in the rev range than the 8 valve xflow can ever give.
If it's got to stay xflow and your capable of a bit of DIY then I would piece together a system yourself. There's a section in the Burton Power catalogue that details all the bits you need.

Tom

If you want to stick to a crossy then you will ultimately spend lots of cash and make limited power gains due to the capacity and design limits of the engine. You will get a smooth power delivery though.
A Zetec can be made to bolt in on the existing chassis mounts and will make more power.
You can spend £4000 on a raceline kit to sort a Zetec
You can spend £3000 on a good after market management kit and throttlebodies for the crossy
The cheaper way for your crossy is to switch to Motor bike carbs on a custom made manifold and ignition only ecu
A company to talk to is BOGG Brothers rolling road near Bridlington. They are a rolling road and also specialise in Fabrication of Manifolds and mapping Bike carbs to cars. The power gains can be amazing.
