PROJECT: "PRESS START TO BEGIN"

I know lots of people have fitted an engine start button to an S1 Elise in the empty slot of the switch array (get them from www.eliseparts.com).

I want to fit a Honda S2000 start button to my Mk2 Elise. Has anyone ever tried this?

A Honda service centre will sell me an S2000 start button for just over £20.

The two problems I can forsee:
1) Where to house the button - there are no spare slots on the mk2.
2) Wiring in the button. Anyone know how difficult this is?

The wiring is easy. The issue is where to put it. The VX220 has it in the middle of the dash top.

Other issue is that the ignition will still turn all the way, so will you ever bother pushing the button?

I've just tried to find the link, but my server's just fallen a sleep and won't let me find it, but there is an article on www.hondacrx.co.uk

From what I can tell it's a v.common crx mod', and very easy as the button fits into the cigarette lighter socket.

I guess that wouldn't work so well on an S2 Elise as it power socket is hidden on the front of the transmission "tunnel" IIRC.

Sounds like a great idea but what will happen to the steering lock, how will this be deployed.

Also how does this make the car secure ?

Curious as I'm an S2 owner too

The Noble does both - start on the key or the start button. I never use the key one....

I'm assuming that if the button simply "piggy-backs" of the current ignition wires everything will still be immobilised until you turn diarm and turn the key to point II.

I've heard that some mk1 owners have disabled ignition-by-key. can anyone shed any light on this? I think it would be nice to have both, though; ignite by key if you are in a rush or use the button to show off!!!!

The Noble does both - start on the key or the start button. I never use the key one....


I know, my mate has one. I think thats a crappy way of doing it though as I like the idea, but would simply never bother with the button configured like that!

I think you'll find you will use the button actually.

I had exactly the same on my mini, and I always used the button.

It only takes a fraction of a second longer to use but the sense of satisfation is aburdly high in comparison to the key...

...conjuring fantasies of:

"Ignition."

"Check."

"Contact."

"Check".....

.....:from engine: Roooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrr.

Everyone should be allowed to fly a Spitfire to work.

Only 'issue' you have it that all of a sudden it's possible to crank the starter with the engine running, which is somewhat more difficult to do with the key mechanism . . .

I'm pretty sure the starter solenoid circuit in most cars only becomes live once the key barrel is in pos' II. So you shouldn't be able to crank the engine without a key in the ingintion...

...unless its my old mini, where you crank the engine from under the bonnet by dropping a screwdriver onto the starter solenoid.

It's very loud when you're in there with it I and cannot whole heartedly recomend hitting your head on the bonnet catch either.

Not with the engine stopped/key out . . . with the engine running . . . I expect the motor would not engage and just make some amusing noises though . . .

Bit late here but, i have a "engine start" button on my Griff that illuminates when the ignition is on and goes off when the engine has started and the button does not work then either. It all came about because my mate has the "honda mod" on his MX5 and though it was a little daft, so i modded his mod.
