Bit of a request for information chaps and chapesses.

House move is on the cards, looking for somewhere in the Cirencester vaccinity.

Fairford has been mentioned as a possible option by friends down that way as a good VFM area.

Currently live in the Heathrow flight path and am quite sick of it to be honest.

Does anyone know what the air traffic is like into RAF Fairford?

Dont want to go out of the frying (flying?) pan, into the fire so to speak.

Thanks

Anywhere out of a Heathrow flight path is an improvement!! Don't think there is too much noise from Fairford, I live near Stroud so can't really be too sure. I think the only regular noise you'll get is when America is bombing Iraq again!

The B-52's used to line up for Fairford approach directly over my house, very very impressive, used to sit in the garden with a beer and a camera.

Cheers

Jon

depends exactly what your looking for...

If you want to avoid planes altogether - then avoid Chippenham/Calne areas as you do get the odd herc/apache (doesnt bother me too much).

There are some nice villages on the A350 (IIRC) south of Cirencester... but yes, over here is very good value for money.

It's been pretty noisy when ever I've been there.

Got mates in Minchinhampton and mates in the Stow on the Wold area so somewhere between these two ideally.

Bourton we have been told to avoid due to the massive influx of tourists.

Northleach remains on the cards.

Fairford was mentioned so we thought we would look into it.

Suggestions always welcome.

You're right about Bourton; you won't be able to move for coachloads of 'em in the summer. Nice place to visit, though.

From what I remember, Northleach is quite nice.

Beat me to it pdV6! So apart from Northleach, Ampney Crucis is nice (but a bit near Fairford if plane noise is an issue). Fairford has a good kebab shop too!

We spent 18 months looking for a house around Swindon. It is hard to avoid a military base in this area but generally we found Fairford to be really very quiet apart from the 2 weeks before the Air tattoo and then you get some really interesting stuff in and out. And a great place to watch the show for free

We ended up very close to Lyneham and the Hercules in the air are no problem at all but they do insist on running the engines on the ground which can get to be a real pain. Actually I will miss seeing the H's doing loops when they go, they are very much part of the scenery. Best of all is when someone wheels out their Spitfire for a few loops, you really can't beat the sound of a merlin.

I would however avoid Brize Norton. This always seemed to be very busy with something taking off or landing every 10 minutes.

Hope that helps

David

PS Other half would like me to point out that large though the Hercules may be she can't quite overtake them in her Scoobie but believe you me she does try!! eek

I live in Kemble just south of Cirencester and next to Kemble airfield and have a workshop just down the road. Very nice part of the country. Lots of people commute to London on the train from Kemble station as well.

If you can bear the annual traffic torment of the Air Tattoo (which I'd obviously be able to) then that whole Fairford, Kempsford, Lechlade area is very nice. I'd certainly consider it if work took me there any more than it already does. Apart from the Air Tattoo and wars, Fairford airfield is virtually deserted, with hardly any movements.

If you're after a rural setting, try villages along the Ciren / Burford road (Barnsley, Bibury etc,.)
North of Ciren (towards Cheltenham) is also nice.
South of Cirencester, on the A429 there's Crudwell and Kemble - still an airfield, but hardly used...apart from a couple of air days each year!
You could head out of Ciren towards Westonbirt e.g. Tetbury...if it's good enough for HRH...

The Ciren-Bibury-Burford road is great. Perhaps also look north of Burford (Chipping Norton way)...
