2006 has been a good year for sports car racing, with the Audi R10 taking the first win for a diesel at Le Mans, the last race of the all-conquering R8, and some pretty good fights between Aston Martin and Corvette in the ALMS. Porsche's RS Spyder, their P2 car, has also been fast as anything, taking the odd overall win in the ALMS.

Still, nothing stands still in motorsport, and 2007 looks to be an even better year. Peugeot is going to take on Audi with their own V12 turbodiesel, the 908. They ought to do well - they make excellent diesel engines, and the old 905s dominated the last days of Group C. They've also gone for a coupé, which makes sense as the ACO wants all P1 cars to be closed tops for 2010.

Porsche know that next year is going to be tougher too. Although the RS Spyder is fast, it has had issues with reliability this year, and is going to face stiff competition from the much cheaper Radical SR9, plus the Acura effort, which will use both Lola and Courage chassis. With that in mind, the RS Spyder Evo has been released, and we will hopefully see customer cars as well as the factory Penskes. Group C and IMSA were on fire back in the day when you could buy a 956 or 962 from Weissach and win races with it, perhaps this is what ALMS and LMS need to rekindle more interest.

Don't forget that this weekend is the Petit Le Mans - on Speed TV in the US, and Motors TV in Europe.
