Hi all, just got a new 07 997S, and have been on several forums so far. There has been much discussion on soot in the tailpipes and what it signifies. Please note my car is fairly new and does not burn oil or leak it, but there is a little soot in the exhaust tips. I had a VW R32 that had the same issue. I have driven the car to 6,500 RPM on several occasions since new (never abusing it). To me it seems like the soot is just caused from excess fuel being burned when stepping on it. My car has about 800 mile on it. Please advise.

Thanks
Mike

Coming up to 15k in my 997C2S. Bit of soot on the exhaust tips but nothing major. Keep an eye on the oil level (I let the comp check every time I fill up) as mine had a habit of consuming quite a bit of oil at the beginning. Settled down now.

Enjoy the 997.

Mine does as well. They changed the exhaust tips as part of a global recall programme and a few weeks later, it was there again. Looks not too nice but so far no real problems with it. Enjoy the car, it's a fantastic machine...

Thanks for the replies Finn and Dr S. I didn't think it was much of a problem since it was something that was also on my R32 and I never had a problem with that car. Since reading posts on several Porsche forums, it seems that oil excessive consumption is a common problem with these cars. Anyways I will see how mine fairs, luckily no problems so far. The car is fantastic, I traded my 01 Esprit on it and have no regrets.

Regards
Mike

Just get some Solvol Autosol and polish it off, either that or have the butler do it for you.

Sounds like she is running a bit rich, if anything wont do her any harm apart from fuel consumption might be a little higher.I run mine on the rich side and i have same deposits.

Perfectly normal for a car in this level of tune.

If you give it a really good run or track session and get it all really hot, most of it will burn off again.
