Could someone please tell me what fan-belt I need for my S2?

Just spent 3 days on the car - Valve clearance, new pipes, waxoyl etc... I take my mate out for a run, not 10 minutes down the road and I develope a sauna under the bonnet!

It seems the fanbelt decided to go AWOL. Had to nurse the motor back in three stages - half a mile pull over wait, another half mile etc... I bought a Granada belt form Halfords and surprise, surprise it doesn't fit (I'm guessing this happens alot?!).

Can anyone fill me in?

I went to buy a spare and read the bible where it suggests taking the old one along (depending on how many pieces yours is now in!)

sorry, realise this doesnt help a great deal. There is a section on this in the bible though and IIRC it suggests it could be one of 2. If you have already tried the Granada 2.9 one then I guess it leaves the "other" one......

I went to get one from halfords a couple of months back, and took the old one in to make sure I got the right one. Basicaly, the one they stock with the same part number as the one I had in my hand were no the same. I eventually got one from a local motor parts shop. I will try and look at the new belt and see if I can give you any details off it!

Roy.

They tend to be a bit of a special and not one from a normal car. Why net make up a belt with string or light rope to get an approximate size and work from there.

Various places sell temporary get-you-home adjustable length fan belts if you get stuck.

Just looked at the belt on my S2-2.9 and it says :
Made in UK-Powertrain - PCFB 1187.
Hpoe that helps.

Just been to my local spare's guy (actually my neighbour). He had a look at the car measured the length with a piece of string and checked out the width.

He has order one in for me. Apparently it is 1025mm long and 13mm wide. I will post the actual spec once I have the belt installed and working.

Thanks for the response...

The alternator on the 2.9 wouldn't fit in an S, so TVR changed the mounting. That's why the Granny belt won't fit.

My S2 has Quinton Hazell QBA1200 (1200mm) belt.

When you fit the new belt, make sure it doesn't cut into the adjacent water hose (this happens on some cars).

Hi John Mac, S27 and Roy C,

Can you guys confirm that you have a single belt around the crankshaft pulley, water pump and alternator?

I need to replace a noisy belt and made the mistake of buying a 2.9 Granada one. Just wanted to check your configuration is the same as mine.

Cheers,

Richard

Just checked the spare belt in my boot and it is a Quinton Hazell QBA 1175.
It was bought by the previous owner and he was meticulous about getting the right part for the job.

It may fit your car... doesn't mean it will fit someone elses.... I speak from experience. Best thing is to measure the original.

Question: if I measure it, do I measure on the inside of the belt (i.e. the on pullies), or around the outside of the belt?

If you go to your Ford dealer, you can get an auxillary belt kit, which consists of 2 belts,so one on the car and one in the boot spare. This is for the 2.9 engine and is about £17 the pair. Some aftermarket ones are 5mm too long and you get too close to that top hose.

Outside is easier.

Hi Justin,

How're you doing? Haven't seen you on here in a while. Has the little one arrived yet?

Yes,the little soul is here.Hopefully the lad will be getting oil under the nails as soon as I'm allowed to venture into the garage with him.Bless the sleepless nights, gripe water etc.How are you coping.Have been following the chassis joy of yours.Must admit to recently buying a new family car,as 'came into a bit of money' and bought a Westie!!!.Nice epoxy chassis and power to weight of 300 bhp!!!
You can get the belts from Inchcape round the corner from work.

Hi Justin,

Glad to hear that you've already got Junior lined up for the assistant mechanic's role (it can be really useful to have a pair of little hands for reaching those inaccessible places sometimes )! My daughter (21 months) loves riding in the S, so that's a good sign, and when my son (6 months) graduates to a forward facing baby seat it'll be time to start the indoctrination process with him.

As you probably gathered, my chassis adventure was a bit of a rollercoaster ride, but alls well that ends well, and at least I know I've got a sorted chassis now.

Excellent news about the Westfield. I know you were gutted about having to part with the S, so I'm glad that you were able to get another toy (and what a toy!). If you're ever in work with it let me know and maybe we can meet for a beer as I'd love to take a look at it.

Cheers,

Richard

Got the fanbelt sorted. I bought 2 belts (1175mm and 1200mm) from Cafco on the basis that one of them would fit and I could get a refund on the other.

I foolishly thought that the belt replacement would be a simple job - yeah right! Unfortunately having loosened the alternator bolts it would only move the width of a gnat's arse before it came into contact with the rocker cover, so I had to wrestle the old belt off, in the style of a B movie hero tangling with a python (in a restricted space). Still, got there in the end, and there's no evidence of any noise now, so I'm well chuffed (and also much better off having replaced a fan belt rather than a water pump!).

So which one did you fit?

(Mine is 1200mm)
