I was at Bruntingthorpe on Sunday, we had three runs down the main runway

Each run I soon achieved change up lights in fifth and carried on with the charge, pedal screwed to floor, until the brake point - it took quite a while to stop!!

So the speedo's playing up. Analogue said 30 on the first two runs, digital said 1** but kept changing it's mind, finally on the last run i changed the refresh rate on the pod and the digital said 189 !!!
The analogue said 0 !

Is this going to be a true reading ?

running on 18" spiders with 40 tyres

let the debate commence

not sure, didn't have the rev counter up - change up is set to 7k max and the lights were just ON all the time, the engine sounded like it was just running flat out - but maybe not 9k (didn't sound like a strain though) handling felt good as well, no lift off

At 7K RPM that works out at 182MPH, impressive glad to hear it was stable at that speed.

thats pretty impressive, when we did the Porsche day there the max was 177 by a modified 996 turbo.JeremyC in his Cerbera 4.5 managed a max of 159(real speed).

The only thing I'd say is that at those speeds the difference between speedo reading & actual speed(ie electronically recorded) can be quite large.

I've previously seen 160 on the clock on the 911 I had and also the Griffith 500 and I have to say it felt nothing like 155 in the 348 at Bruntingthorpe.

That is impressive, isn't it! The rev limiter cuts in at 7300 rpm (about 189 I think), but I doubt you saw much over 180. I'm assuming the rev meter (and therefore changeup lights) is accurate (must be linked to ECU surely).

Well a couple of the Chims were doing 160 so it's not that far of the mark to suggest that was the speed

As said I had three runs, Jason Shepherd who was running the show asked wether I got over 190 (this before i had any kind of reading on the first two runs) - he races the bloody things so he should have some idea of whats possible

His last comment when I mentioned the 189 was:-
"Yeah good, imagine what it's like being right up someones a***e doing that speed trying to get past them" ....uuuummm!

But yes it was very stable, I wouldn't have wanted to turn the wheel very much but there was no sense of hanging on for the grim reaper or anything - mind you a blow out might have changed that!! (I'm going to be awake tonight now!)

It braked quite well from that speed but took a long, long time to stop properly - I was still doing what must have been 60-70 when I started to run out of road but felt like i could open the door and get out. Only then did I apply good pressure on the pedal. So don't try it on the motorway or an open public road is my advice!!!

The other thing that impressed me was that it climbed staright up there, roll gently in first, give some in second, give max in third, fourth, fifth and accelarating all the way to the lights so to speak (the change lights) the marshal halfway down the track said it sounded like heaven as it went past!!!!

Standstill, but on the 'GO..' I didn't give it max in first, let it roll up first, but I wasn't hanging around!

21TVR, you said that the handerling was good at this speed, have you had the suspension uprated since you bought the car or is this factory standard??

I had 176 on the digital speedo at Elvington last year.Analogue read about the same. this was at about 6800 rpm, had a misfire which would not let me go higher. Tuscan S s were bowling past me, and the car was stable - was dodging runway lights!!! LOL!!

There is a spreadsheet on the Tyres section of www.tvrbooks.co.uk which will actually calculate your speed after you've put in tyre sizes, diff ratio, gearbox ratios etc.

I put in the data for my car and it showed that at max revs the car should top out at 197.4 mph!!! With roughly 52,81,117 and 157 mph being acheived in the first 4 gears.

markez79 I don't actually know!! i should check with the factory/dealers really

It was built with an 18" wheels request so I assume that they sorted the suspension to go with this - but heh!

It was going round the Brunters track well, I don't feel it's lacking in any way, but then I have not driven it with any other config so how would I know!

I can now tell you that the suspension is standard factory spec for a standard 4.0 Tusk April 2001 build date

This may not help - but may also still be interesting to you. My Snooper S6 Neo displays speed calculated via GPS trig - it was only 4-5 mph down on the car's displayed speed upto 100 mph (did not go over). This is more in agreement than the speedo on my company Lexus.

Yes, one of the Chimaera's had a GPS in the boot, I think that was reading very close to the 160 their speedo came up with!!
