Afternoon

caved into temptaation at lunchtime and bought myself a 360 with PGR3 and Pro Evo 6. Just waiting to finish work at 8pm now...

When connecting to a HD tv, can you just use the cable that comes with it or is there a better cable out there?

cheers

Andy

ps its the premium version

AFIK the premium comes with the component hd cable. That is the one to use if your tv has component in. My tv doesn't so I had to use the VGA cable.

Use the cable that came with it, make sure it's set to HD mode on the part that plugs into the 360. You can also get a VGA cable for about £15 which will plug into the VGA port on the telly (if you have one) but the difference between the two is barely noticeable.

It's also worth starting it with the switch set to SD mode, changing the TV settings in there to 60hz, then turning it back on with it switched to HD, as I couldn't find another way to get it to run at 60hz as default.

HD is 60Hz by definition, changes you make to the normal PAL settings won't have any effect once you switch over to HD

Well you say that, but the first time I went to start Hitman it told me I had to change to 60hz mode, only way I could find to do this was by going back to SD mode, changing it there and going back to the HD mode, sure enough, next time I started Hitman up it appeared just fine.

VGA, since it has more resolutions.

That's odd then 720p can actually be 25, 30, 50 or 60Hz iirc but I thought the 360 only ever outputted at 60Hz... Certainly over VGA it does.

Sorry . tis not the HD tv signal thats important for games, its the console running at 60hz or something, and as Steve said, for a lot of games you have to switch it to PAL 60hz in SD mode then switch to HD mode, once done can be forgotten.

XBOX 360 premium comes with a cable for component and composite as said (remember the toslink optical too!).
If you dont have component then VGA is the 'other' best cable (results vary). I think it also comes with a scart socket convertor for composite.

No HDMI or DVI, unless you have a DVI-a or DVI-I which can accept analog signals and get a component->DVI convertor.

What ^^^ said. This causes most problems when trying to use old xbox games. The screen can be corrupted and have a big black border around it, or it just refuses to start.

You're right, but I had the same problem as Steve. Mine was set to 50Hz for the TV output, and although the VGA connection was actually running at 60Hz, some games (the Hitman demo being one) seem to check the stored setting (i.e. 50Hz) rather than the actual setting (i.e. 60Hz) and refuse to run.

As Steve says, you have to go back to using the other cable to change this setting because it doesn't appear when you have the VGA cable plugged in.

My TV only has DVI-d & VGA Port, the XBOX 360 doesn't output to HDMI/DVI-D yet, so will have to use the VGA port. I have and it is excellent!
