Last weekend, myself and 11 fellow motoring enthusiasts had a great days driving in Northumberland. This was organsed by myself and a friend. I did the people arrangeing and he sorted the routes.

I'm keen to do more of these in the North East/Northy Yorkshite area and, therefore, would like to make an appeal for routes. Preferred roads are NSL (obviously). I am looking at drives of around 1.5 hours each. The more the merrier.

Also, can anyone recommend driver friendly places (cafe, pub, etc..) for us to meet. The format for these drives is that people drive their own car and pair up with an observer. Then they sawp over. So at any time half the cars are left parked-up. Obviously, it is important that we find somewhere that is secure but also OK with this arrangement. Inevitably, we'll need refreshements and lunch/dinner at some point, so a good quality selection of food is also important.

I'm posting this in both the North East and North Yorkshire sections of the forum, to gain the maximum exposure.

Any help or guidance would be very grateful appreciated. If you have pre-planned routes, we will, of course, acknowledge them (XX from PH!) when we get them printed up.

NEPH has had pub meets and road runs going for the past 4 years. I would suggest you join what is already a thriving group. We have a very driver friendly pub near Spennimoor where we meet monthly. Things are slowing down now for winter but we'll probably meet once more this year then start up again in March.

Our runs are normally between 4 and 6 hrs long with the occasional bigger event with overnight stops.

I don't understand the park up bit, why don't you all just drive?

I don't like the idea of giving away route plans. If you've done these yuorself then you'll understand the value in time and petrol planning them to make sure they go without hitch. Others here may be happy to share but I think we would all like you and yours to join in with what already happens here in NEPH land.

Hi Bob

Thanks for the response. I can understand your position but I think we are doing quite different things. We restrict our numbers to around 20 (sometimes less). Essentially many of the participants are advanced drivers, some being emergency trained.

So, the format of a typical day would be to meet up then, say, if there were 8 cars going out, set off over 2 routes, maybe 15 minutes apart. The idea is to make swift, discreet progress across challenging roads. We don't convey under any circumstances.

I can understand that you want to protect your investment in terms of petrol. I would be happy to join/make a donation to cover any of these costs.

We are doing this to try and encourage young[er] drivers to look at the benefits of advanced driving, given the appaling record of <26 year old drivers.

I hope this better explains what we are trying to do. Many thanks.

Oh, I know some good routes. However the fact that I 'make progress' as my IAM Police examiner described it means I am not about to shout about them on here (Sgt. Brian Laverick, Cleveland Police m/cycles section, in case you think I'm making it up).

After some plastic-fantastic boomtastic Halfords refugee carved me up on one such route three times this afternoon (I was expecting it, he thought he was clever) I waved at him as I passed at 105 (km/h, of course ). With two gears still to go....

Bikes, gotta love 'em...

Personally, I wouldn't give any of my routes to anyone I didn't know. No offense, but we don't really know anything about you. Bob's suggestion about getting involved with NEPH is a good one.

My main concern is that to work a route out it has to be driven prior to a run. There is a lot of care and attention goes into the organisation of these events, taking into account everyones safety and enjoyment. Driving a second hand route as you are suggesting indicates that you seem unwilling to find roads yourself which are suitable for your types of run. It's not about contributing money.

Where are you based? I only ask, as getting out there is the best way to find roads that are suitable for your types of run.

I'm based in Teesside. It is not a case of being unwilling to do it, it is just a case of the fact that I have no particular skill in such things (I was off sick the day we were taught map reading and navigational skills at school) plus that I am much more comfortable sorting the other aspects of ensuring that the runs out go smoothly.

I thought this would be a quick-win in terms of getting some routes so I could go ahead and organise some more Driving Days. If I have to do it all myself, it then becomes much more of a burden especially all the things that I am trying to juggle these days.

I really did think that it would be a case of:

OK, try this:

Assuming a start at Teesside Retail Park...

A66 Eastbound for M'bro, take first exit s/bound on A19.
At Crathorne/ Yarm exit, take first exit for Crathorne.
In Crathorne, 1st left.
1st right, follow to end, then left.
200 yards, turn right, follow to end. Turn left.
Couple of miles to exit right for Carlton.
Through Carlton, take left for Chop Gate (via Carlton Bank).
Follow to Chop Gate, turn right.
Follow to Helmsley.
In Helmsley, left for Pickering/ Kirkbymoorside.
Follow to and through Kirkbymoorside.
Take left for Hutton-le-hole, Moors Centre etc.
Follow through Hutton-le-hole and across Blakey Ridge (past Lion Inn).
In Castleton, resist temptation to turn left and go straight through for Danby.
In Danby, left at cross-roads opposite King William pub. Follow to Moors road (Guisborough to Whitby, A171 is it?), turn right.
Second exit left for Grinkle Park, take that. Follow to end in Easington. Turn left onto A174.
After Loftus and Carlin How, take right for Saltburn.
Through Saltburn, follow signs for Middlesbrough/ Teesside.
Take A174 Parkway to junction with A19, turn right.
Exit A19 onto A66 West, first right back into retail park.

Job done, 90 miles give or take. Takes in dual-carriageway, fast single/c A-road, twisty B-road, single-track moorland, steep hills and light-traffic town centres. Sheep, mud, numpties and lunatics in unspecified quantities.

Liken what we are doing to an IAM run, if you want. I'm not a Traffic Cop and even if I were, I am sure there are much bigger fish to fry.

Thanks for the route, wedg1e. Marvellous.

Can you suggest an alternative starting point? I believe the retail park is used by the boy racer convoy type which we are emphatically not. Cheers.

Try the car park of Crathorne Hall Hotel, you pass it on Wedgies route. Definitely not boy racer territory.
