Has anyone done one themselves, I am very handy with the spanners. Need some sort of advice would you do it yourself or pay someone. Has the gearbox to be completly removed. Read a lot of posts on this forum regarding this issue had a look under the car today while on the ramp, unusal set up having never worked on one before, just need some advice.

Cheers Tony.

You'll need to get it up on a lift, ramps will never give you enough access imo. There is a hell of a lot of removal of parts to access other parts(exhaust, transaxle etc etc),and its pretty time consuming.

Its a b*tch of a job,to be honest, but if you have all the right gear anything's possible. I'd seek advice from your local Porsche specialist.

They're doing one on "the Garage" right now on Discovery.
Watch it on Discovery +1 in about 45 minutes!

My thought is not to do it yourself!

I know the 968 has a different bellhousing for easier clutch replacement than the 944, does anyone know if the S2 had this ?

Well I don't know about a 944 but on a 924 its easy.

And everyone goes on about 911 engines being a nightmare but I really don't agree, heavy and long job but not hard.

i have access to a 4 post ramp so that should make it easier, does look a lot of parts to remove before access to the clutch. Will give it a go at the weekend will let you all know how I get on, may want some more advice then.

Here's a good place for 944 how-to manuals:

Tony,
its prolly a two man job, transaxel will need to be removed/dropped. alaong with loads of other stuff, a lot of prep work and WD40, unless you got air tools.

Also you need quite a bit of manovering room.

not saying not to DIY, but its a real pain.

I am just about to start the same job. From previous work I've completed on 944s I agree about the time consuming bits - although I did get a quote from a local specialist who said they could do it in around 5 hours. I doubt I'll be any quicker than that but at the same time I'll be able to take care of the other jobs, e.g. RMS, that (may) need doing as well without incurring additional labour costs.

I'm looking forward to it although I won't have the luxury of a 4-post lift but I will have air tools
