I am impatiently awaiting a new 997 that should arrive in January. On a more mundane level, I am wondering (having never owned anything like this before) just how concerned I should be about security.

The car will live in a garage, which opens onto a side road at the back of our house (in a not particularly crime-ridden town in the south of England). It will have Porsche's own VTS device, of course (which is now a standard option).

I do know that a new Mercedes E500 was stolen by means of the keys having been taken from inside the owner's house, quite nearby, although the E500 lived on the road, not in a garage. (Which does prompt the question: what is the best thing to do with the keys and the VTS card overnight? It's a matter of opinion, I guess.)

Apologies to be asking about a rather nasty subject - it's a sad reflection that this is the sort of thing we need to think about with cars like these - but I'd certainly welcome any insight, experiences or advice that any of you might have.

Thanks ....

My car lives in the garage...

and having just gotten another car (for driving to town/gym as short journies are not what the 911's about) that as par of the course is parked infront on the garage - and is rather undesirable, so unless someone see's the Porsche going in, I have nothing to worry about...

On the key front, there are 2 schools of thought:

1. I live alone, my keys are upstairs at night (or in my pants pocket) - i never leave them downstairs to avoid the opportunist theft of my P&J.

2. People with small children/families are the opposite - they leave them downstairs, so if someone wants the car, they can take it without disturbing or causing potential harm to their family.

You need to decide whats best for you - my advice is try not to worry about it, but always sensible to be aware of your surroundings..

If you are really worried, alarm the garage or put one of your home proximity sensors in there.

A few years back when I was living in a certain neighbourhood, I had one of those black and white monitors with the camera in the garage, nothing ever happened, but it also never played on my mind.

I dread to think what I would have done if the garage got broken into, being a coward that I am!

May I give you a simple cheap bit of advice.

go on to ebay and buy one of the many auctions for porsche keys, they are obviously for another car and thus will not open or start yours.

Thief breaks in smash and grab stylee, runs to garage or drive with key and finds out it doesn't open the car, at this point 99.99% will scarper as they are essentially cowards, worst case they come back in and take the real key anyway, basically not much too lose and gives you one more little chance.

My car is parked in an underground secured car park about 300 yds from my house - I don't use it as daily driver so no big deal. Either way, I wouldnt want to leave it outside my place as the "nice" area of NW London I live in is frequently targeted by a lively little yardie gang. They're partial to breaking into houses during the day and tearing the place apart looking for keys.. At least for the moment they're waiting until you've gone to work..

In my case, I'm far more relaxed about having the car stashed out of sight. The keys are kept well apart from the VTS card too.

Paranoid.. Maybe but it's unfortunately part and parcel of living in a UK city..

Many thanks for the suggestions and advice.

I like the fake key idea (and I guess it might be possible to get a duff VTS card, too).

The punch approach also has its attractions ....
