I'm wondering how unlucky one has to be to suffer big costs on a GT3. I know its a £40k engine so warranty appears to make sense. (I have renewed mine twice.)

But (and not just cos of the price hike) I'm wondering if its worth it for me.

Each car is unique so has to be evaluated separately.

I bought mine (LHD) with barely 1,800 miles on it. I've had the oil changed every 6 months and the car's done 15,000 miles. I do around 7 trackdays a year.

Anyone know how many have gone pop or dropped a gear etc that would show up if its worth 895 notes a year (i know its only a couple of quid or so a day)

Cheers

Ajit.

Dunno where you'd get an official figure, but I suspect its not that many. Whilst a new crate engine is 40k, barring utter catastrophe I expect you'd be able to get it rebuilt for less, or even pick up a 2nd hand one. Personally I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. Even with a warranty, if you overrev it and blow it up you are on your own, and I would guess thats a lot more likely than an unprovoked mechanical failure.

If I destroy mine I guess it will be time to send it to manthey. At least with an upgrade you can feel a bit better about it all

If a car lapses from warrantee, can a warrantee be taken out at a later date?

Yes but you have to pay for inspection and bring the car up to their standard.

Would this affect the resale value or make it harder to sell if you let the warrantee lapse?

Hard to say for sure, although it is definitely going to be nice if trying to sell private. If you are just chopping in at a dealer I guess it is less important. I think it is worth maintaining if you have one, but not sure I'd bother getting it into the scheme if it has fallen out.

I think if i was buying one privately, i'd either want a sizeable discount compared to OPC prices (which one would typically get) or i'd want to put it thru the 111 point check and get a wty. In that sense, i guess i'm saying the lack of a warranty would adversely affect resale price (to the tune of the cost of the 111 pt check and 895 notes on top).

ajit..as yours is a mk1 it must be 6/7 years old?

mine is 7 and Ive got two years of OPC warrantability (is that a word?) left.

After that if im stupid Ill get a 997gt3rs(mostlikely outcome) or if im sensible hang on to it and warranty it via an independant...have you looked into indy warranties?..are they worth the paper they're written on?

Hi - I've always been lead to beleive indie wties are not worth the paper they're written on - but on that "worthless" paper, they seem to read ok. Maybe some of our resident car retailers would comment on this?

As for whats next - I know how much i'm going to pay for my 997gt3rs and its only a matter of time till it gets there....till then, i'm keeping my gt3.

cheers

Current Indy warranties I know of are Paragon's, Weltmeister, Hartech (my bro had a 968 under their comprehensive warranty and they were really good)

I wonder whether Barry from hartech would warranty one??

Barry?

Ah yes, I hadn't thought of Porsche specialists, I was referring to the RAC type cover.

Given that a set of con rod bolts for a GT3 MKI (Titanium) is over a grand.. I'd say a warranty is worth the money... In fairness, you don't hear of GT3 engine failures that often but I have one just in case.

Forgetting the engine for a minute - the MAF sensors are a weak point on the GT3 / GT2 / turbo and cost around £500 for replacement. I was 1 month in to my extended warranty when this was required & it was done without quibble..

If you're a gambling man - take the risk.. Im the sort of guy that spends $20 in the casino during a week in Vegas, so I buy insurance hehe

Thats the thing, gambling in a casino is guaranteed to cost you. Not so with a warranty...

Can buy a fair few mafs saving 900 a year though
