I finally got around to playing this game and I am playing two games at the moment. One as the Huns the other as The Western Roman empire.

Has anyone succesfully completed the game as the Western Empire, on the hardest level of difficulty?. I am trying at the moment and it is hard. You have no money, your cities are always on the edge of revolt, and your infantry, for the most part, are useless.

I suppose that is the point; because it was all these reasons that the Western Empire was doomed. But has anyone managed to reverse history?

Not won, but well on the way I believe.

My strategy:

It was important to me to keep Rome at all costs [not key to the game, but something I wanted to do] so I moved the General with the best management skills to Rome.

I accepted I would loose some / most Citys to revolt in the early rounds so I focused on keeping a small number of cities I could turn into good cash generators in the long term

I sent diplomats to make as many friends and trading relationships as I could [big part of my strategy]

Focused on religious decent in my towns… e.g. if I had a General who ‘hates Pagans’ and all the population of his town were Pagan.. I moved him.. or put him in charge of attacking a rival faction.

Then it was damage limitation time… whilst seeking to minimise the cash outflow…. best way I believed to do this was winning a 'small' war and pillaging their towns… some of the Rebel towns met this fate as did one of the barbarian factions to the North of Italy

Eventually I started generating cash, and building an army that could hold at bay the inevitable invasions from the East [I wanted to keep Rome].

Most fun is playing as the Eastern Empire, as it is under assault from the start

Can’t wait for Medieval II.

I am part of the way through and have used a similar strategy.

I looked at how likely some cities were to revolt and simply moved all of my soldiers out of the ones I thought couldn't be kept in order to concentrate on ones I may have a chance.

I am also trying to survive on pillaging towns (using the exterminate option).

I am still in minus funds at present. I will have to look more closely at the religous aspect.
