My Tuscan has just been gutted at dealer and Engine returned to Blackpool with worn followers.
Q1.Will they also change the cams and valves as standard?
Q2. I read on PH somewhere, that the dealer will want payment for this, although it's a warranty job? (The dealer convinced me that it was better than returning the whole car as it would be a faster turn-around).
Q3. Will I need to 'run in' the engine when it comes back?
Q4. Will it need a thousand mile service and tappet adjustment after re build?
Q5. Should I have to pay for this additional 1K service as it would not have been necessary if the bloody thing hadn't broken in the first place?
Info - This is the second time in a year that it has been returned to B'pool for head work. I keep hearing of this faulty batch of followers but my car was a Mid 2001 model with its 1st head rebuild at Feb 2002. How big a batch are we talking here...?
Any info or relevant experiances much appreciated.

Thanks
Daz

PPS - Briefly thought of swapping for a 'reliable' porker, but came to my senses after seeing 800 silver one's in one day.
PPPS - Does anyone from B'pool read these pages, if so will there ever be a definitive official or unofficial comment on this issue?
PPPPPPPPPPPPPS - I still love my Tuscan!

There probably wont be a definitive answer from the factory because the box of fish fingers was a mix of those from Birds Eye and those from Iceland - after a good shake up it's difficult to tell which are the soft ones and which are still frozen, and even then they all taste the same!

I'm just guessing!!!

You will need to run it in after the work (that's about it for my wisdom)
Mine's a mid 2001 engine as well......gulp!

good luck and see you soon

As I understand it, the cam followers are/were not adequately hardened ? Couldn't a decent engineering company sort out an alternative supply ? Thereby solving the problem ? Haven't read of other significant Speed 6 problems ?

Bad luck with the engine..mines back there too at the moment

A couple of answers:

Q1 - Maybe..depends
Q2 - My dealer told me that you needed to have the engine removed and shipped. It cost me £1300. I rang TVR who told me that if I had just sent them the car they would have taken the egine out FOC !!! Basically the dealer ripped me off.
Q3 - Yes, only have to be a bit carefull for first 1000 miles before they put proper oil back in.
Q4 - Yes, it will need 1k service. This should be done FOC at your dealer and you should be given a new one year warranty for you engine.
Q5 - No don't pay... in fact you shouldn't have to pay anything - 2 engine rebuilds is not acceptable

Good luck..hope you get it back soon !

Thanks bandit - The dealer said that It would take much longer if they sent the whole car, and did not mention charging! As it was understood that this work was warranty... I guess I'll know the answer week after next (as I spoke to TVR directly and my engine was due to be complete by Friday 28th). B'pool also stated that the 1k service tappet adjust would be warranted (which I took as FOC)however nothing in the way of new 1 year warranty was mentioned. Did you get this? (From dealer or Factory)?
Thanks

The 1000 mile service will be FOC from your dealer.

You don't actually get a written 1 year guarantee from TVR for the engine, its just an "accepted" agreement. -I think it might just be that they guarantee their work for 1 year.

This paid off for me, as although my engine was out of official warranty the second time it went, it was only 11 months since TVR repaired it last time. TVR agreed to fix the engine FOC on this basis.

Good luck, hope you get your motor back soon!
Haven't seen mine since 4th January ! (althought there was a lot more than just engine work being done on my car !)

Mine's been back in the car for 3000 miles since re-build (mid 2001 engine) I'm told that my engine went back to Coventry not Blackpool and had complete top-end and bottom re-build. So far it's 'better than new'. My dealer (who by-the-way didn't sell me the car) took the engine out (for better turn-around time) and didn't charge a penny!
My answers to your other questions are:
Q3. In my case total re-running in. A pain yes, but good practice for my new Tuscan S - due next few weeks!
Q4/5. Yes. But no charge from my dealer.

It all seems to depend on the dealer and their knowledge of the engines/TVR. I was lucky - I have a superb dealer. Hope this helps
