I'm going to treat myself to a games console over the christmas period. Question is though, which one of the above?
I'm fairly casual about gaming, just now and then play.
360:
pros - xbox live, Hi-def capability, established catalogue of games
cons - more expensive so harder to justify as a casual toy
Wii
pros - cheaper, innovative controller, "fun" element of ninty games
cons - lack of xbox live type service, possible lack of quality games available on other platforms, gimicky nature of controller
What should I do?
objective rather than fan boy comments welcomed especially

You'll be able to play online with the Wii, so it doesn't lack everything XBox live has. Personally as you say you're a casual gamer you'd be better off with that, get some fun party games on it like Monkey Ball, a couple of controllers and you'll have a great laugh, especially if you break it out when you've got a few people over and the beers are flowing. To really get the most out of the 360 you need to spend a fair amount of money getting a HDTV and proper surround sound set, if you have wifi at home you'll also need to spend extra to get the 360 hooked up to that, whereas the Wii does it right out of the box.
I'm definitely buying the Wii.
WiiConnect is going to be just like Xbox live (by the look of it!)
I already have a gaming PC that was built mainly for that purpouse so I have no intention of getting a 360 or PS3.
I want a gaming innovation that will make me want to play a console and that will be the Wii!
I also cant face paying £45/£50 for the same game on 360 that i can get for PC for £25-£35.
Thats crazy!

Think I'll go Wii - do you forsee supply problems over christmas?
Yes and no.
I forsee supply issues in the release week. But the Wii should be appearing in large numbers and I suspect if you poke your head in to somewhere different (Toys R' Us, Woolworths, etc. as opposed to Game) you might well find one sat on the shelves.
In this situation I think I'd have a Wii (God it's so easy isn't it!?)
Anyway the Wii seems to be aimed at the more casual gamer with many reviews I've seen having it as a more casual box potentially bought as a second console for the more serious gamers.
I don't imagine it will come with the same "serious" software such as PGR, Gran Turismo, Gears of War, Halflife etc, but I bet it will have some fun games in there - and with the new controller you could even kid yourself that you are exercising.
[fanboy]Having said all of that I wouldn't buy a Wii, I'd have a 360...[/fanboy]

The Wiiiiii Is going to be a kids machine, Hope you like Mario!
Not strictly true. The Wii is both the most casual machine and also the one the hardcore gamers will be after as Nintendo can really work some magic with their games. I ordered mine from Woolworths a couple of weeks back as they came through for my 360 and I ordered that pretty late.
The wii is supposed to be aimed at the whole family. This seems to have worked with the ds so i think its a viable approach with the wii. if your old school in games tho and want to see flashy graphics 360 all the way. its a bit of a chalk/cheese question tbh. i have a 360 and am awaiting the release of the wii. One thing that amazed me about this approach to games is that my 65 year old mother who hasnt touched a game in her life and barly reads english picks up the ds to play brain training when shes bored!
If i were to go the 360 route what is *needed* and what is not.
Hard disk? Is this important? If not I think i could cope with a wired controller and just get the core system and add xbox live (do you really need the headset for this?)
It starts to get expensive if you go premium and wii starts to look better

If you go the 360 route I would recommend a hard drive and headset and Xbox live gold package. Live is better with the headset - and may become more important as "tactics" start to get used in the larger games such as COD3. To be fair if you're plannig on spending that kind of money, adding in £20 or do for a headset shouldn't make that much difference, but you can always add it later.
There'll be an HD DVD add on coming soon too (C. £120)- something that could be worth considering, dos the Wii support a next gen DVD format?
