Something I miss from the Xbox is the use of voice in PC games.

If myself and a friend just want to be able to talk via out headset in GT Legends or rFactor etc can we just use a simple program like MSN or skype running in the background?

Whats better about the game orientated services like Teamspeak etc?

What if any do other PHers use?

I have Skype running in the background when I am playing online on my PC. Just call up the people I want to speak to then launch the game. Works fine and have never had any problems with it.

Ventrilo is very good. You install the software, connect to a channel, and use anykey as push to talk. I think it works the same way as skype, but you can have as many people on the same channel as you like. Great for 8-way Company of heroes action!

Another good piece of software is crossfire, you create a gaming account, and it allows you to search for people playing the same game as well.

I was using X-fire but have changed to google talk as xfire's quality was quite poor. google talk seems a lot better whilst in battlefield 2 anyway.

Yep, Teamspeak!

We actually used to run it on the PH server in GT Legends..
Only a few of us used it, but this meant we could abuse people behind their backs biglaugh

It's great thumbup I can try and stick the server back up if you like..

Dave.

i use teamspack for playing with my mates of all the FPSs out there, but use Ventrillo for when i'm playing EvE-online. X-fire does a good job for random talking if theres no server available, or we aint playing the same game. i've got skype installed but i've never used the voice call function.

tbh, i'd stick with msn/skype/xfire, unless you are getting 30+ people, and then its worth looking into a teamspeak/vent server
