Last week I took Emma up to knaresborough, and round harrogate for the day, we had a bite to eat in knaresborough, parked the car down kirkgate (very steep hilly road) and had a grand time.

Unfortunately we got a parking ticket, due to not displaying our disk properly, due to parking on the steep hill it kept sliding off the dashboard, so I popped it on the seat in full view.

Hence some little git sticking me with a £30 ticket.

The stupidity of it is that its a 2 hour waiting area and we were there about 45 mins, they don't charge for the parking, there was literally nowhere else to put the disk, they weren't inconvenienced at all, its not like I didn't buy a ticket, and most importantly I like that part of the world and tend to go there a lot, and not being funny this has put me off, if the council doesn't care enough about the tourist trade to write off a ticket when the owner sends a polite letter in explaining the reasons behind the problem they obviously don't want your business.

So sadly I will now probably end up going the same was as everyone else and taking my business out of town to the big shopping centres where you can park with no risk of an over zealous jobsworth hitting you in the pocket.

Oh and another little irony, on walking back up the road to check not one other car had a parking pass or disk displayed, they had all been there since we parked and no parking tickets..............call me cynical but might it be because the parking warden has a problem with nice cars.

Rant over.

We also have the 2 hour disc system in Bedale Oliver and it is an excellent system that allows shoppers to park FREE for 2 hours, which is plenty of time for most people. The alternative to this system (and one which the local authority are keen to pursue) is to charge for parking which would be seriously detrimental to local businesses.

The system falls down when it IS NOT enforced because local residents and office workers occupy the spaces all day and visitors cannot park. It is therefore essential that the system is enforced, for your benefit as a visitor.

In your instance I am sure that if you write to the council and explain the exact circumstances, maybe enclosing a photograph of the disc in situ they will consider cancelling the ticket.

Did that, i got a polite * Off from the council who pointed out in their usual beurocratic and unable to see sense way "the disk must be displayed prominantly in a front or side window, while we appreciate your car hampers this we see no reason to cancel the ticket as the rules of parking were clearly broken"

Not word for word but you get the gist.

Gits.

Write to Knaresborough tourist information office to explain why you won't be going back there. Maybe write to some of the local traders too to explain why they'll be seeing one less customer in future. These local government cretins need to be defeated before they get bigger ideas.
