A common fault seems to be the spring and peg thing on the engine cover falling off, such that when you pull the lever expecting the cover to pop up, it doesn't. I know pople have at this point resorted to drastic measures to open it up, but it might just need lifting through the vents, as nothing is holding it closed anymore! The problem is when you re-attach the offending part, there is a certain amount of 'adjustability' in its position and if you put it too far to the offside of the car, you can jam it shut when you close the lid. Has anyone taken the action of supergluing it in place once its working ok, or putting some loctite on the threads to stop it falling off again?

I sometimes had a problem with the boot release whenever I filled the boot too much... It wouldn't pop open when I pulled the handle, and you couldn't pull the handle and lift the boot lid at the same time - it needed another pair of hands.

If you loosen the hinges on the boot lid then you can recentre it if you have problems with the catch.

I fixed the problem finally when I bought an S2.

Yes a second pair of hands is needed if you tighten the post on the boot lid too much (to get the lid flush with the rear clam). To release it push down and hold the boot lid over the top of the pin, and then pull the handle. The boot should pop up. If it is still a little reluctant then wiggle the lid left/right forward/backward whilst pulling the handle.

They always say you're supposed to keep the system well greased - where? The lock bit is fine on mine its the handle that sticks
