So, if I was after another 993 and my primary concerns/requirements were....

1 daily commute, some traffic (the manual in my 993 c4 is playing havoc with an old war wound so doc says auto/tiptronic is only way to go)
2 looks (call me shallow but i like the look of that widebody)
3 residuals (a relatively rare 993 is going to help depreciation perhaps more than my c4)
4 giving rear wheel drive a go (is the c2s a more "pure" 991 drive than the standard c4 i've got?)
5 safety (is the c2s any more or less stable than the standard c2 in terms of hedge hunting)

....while outright speed, trackday ability and limit-pushing handling aren't vital to me (heresy!)....

...would a 993 c2s be a good idea? I've seen a couple i like.

Nodz,

My 993 C2 is a tip and I love it.

To be honest I would have preferred a manual, but my left arm doesn't work to good since a big motorbike smash 6 years ago, so I opted for the tip and have no regrets.

It still seems like a pretty fast car, and I split my driving between using the manual change or using auto about 50/50.

If I'm on busy roads where it seems pointless bothering to overtake, I just knock it into auto and laze along - it's really relaxing. Then when the roads permit, knock it into manual and take control.

Most will argue that a tip is not what these great performance cars are about. But on the UK roads I personally have found it okay.

The biggest niggle for me is the gear ratios are too far apart. But you get used to it and drive in a way that compensates.

Drive one and try it before you buy.

In fact, try a manual on the M25 at 08.30. Then I'm pretty sure you'd go for the tip!

I have a 996 C4 Tip and it has totally dispelled my cynicism around "novelty" gearboxes. Its easy to drive when u want to relax, but with much of the feedback of the manual when you want to get jiggy with it. I also test drove a 993 Tip which is 4 speed - its nice, but not as good as the 5 speeed box on the 996.
Dealer also pointed out the financial "advantages" of the Tip - it can't be over-revved and you don't need a new clutch every 20k miles.

1. IMO a tip only makes sense when you use the car everyday and then only if the manual would get you down after a while.
2. The wide body cars are stunning - you'll love it.
3. true
4. The 2S is lighter than the C4 and of course RWD only so yes it should be more nimble, more fun etc - in the dry of course. But you'd have to factor in the tiptronic on this. The fat tyres and stiffer suspension make the wide body cars tramline more but it's not as bad as some reviews I've read.
5. About the same in the dry, you'd probably have to be more careful in the wet.

Sounds like you've already convinced yourself - go for it I think it's a natural upgrade and you'd never look back.

One of Pavlov's boys? Or is it one of those word-association fixations? rolleyes

Unless you're really trying hard to beat the clock (and then only if you're a top-notch driver), you would find a Tiptronic met virtually all your requirements. I can't say I'm a fan of the wider-bodied 993 versions unless they're in the turbo configuration, but if a 2S floats your boat, go for it. Good luck with the purchase and have fun!

Thanks for those words (or most of them!)

Actually i had an enlightening 45 mins with Ray at Northway this afternoon.

I was viewing a black c2s that just didn't do it for me (although the widebody looked great). Anyway, I then explained my predicamant to Ray and he came up with some points to keep me from having to take the tiptronic route.....

It turns out that the RS clutch on my car is very hard and not that smooth (Ray checked it). He let me drive a normal 993 with a newish clutch and it was quite a lot easier (although it didn't pick up quite so aggressively). He also said that the hard back sports seats in my car don't go back as far as the standard seats and that this is contributing to the fact that my legs are quite cramped up under the steering wheel. While extending the steering wheel out or even getting a new steering wheel would help too. And LHD would help as well with more room for the left leg to stretch out.

So i might get away with either reversing the modifications on my car ie back to standard clutch, standard seats, readjusted steering wheel etc or, even better, buying another car that fufills the exact criteria and doesn't have these mods (and going for the widebody at the same time).

I also sat in a C4S that Ray has and that seemed to have more room (i think that the steering wheel is further out on these cars).

So....anyone got a blue LHD c4s with standard clutch and seats they want to sell me?
