I've made a handful of posts over the last few months, but never really said hello, so: hello, everybody!

And I'm pleased to say I finally collected my 911 yesterday, a C4S. Having done just over a hundred miles, I really couldn't be happier with it. After more than a few years, I am quite delighted to finally have one. (This is my first Porsche.) It is *much* better than I remember from the test drives and, I dare say, will improve as it runs in over the next few months.

No doubt, I will have lots of dumb questions in due course, but I'll venture one right now: as I probably won't do more than around 5,000 miles over the next year, am I being overly cautious to want to change the oil - and filter - towards the end of this year? Given my expected mileage, the first service will not be for two years or so.

(Interestingly, the guy at the OPC with whom I have been dealing (who has been more than helpful, BTW) seemed to think that this would not be a completely bad idea.)

What year is your car ? If I recall , anything up to 2004 needs an annual inspection at least, and going two years without an oil chance wouldn't be a great idea .. Even in terms of service history when it comes time to sell.

Wot Cocky sed.

Low mileage cars can have an Annual Check for £100 ish at OPC.

The following year you have the next due service.

READ THE OWNER'S HANDBOOK hehe

nice 1 - enjoy it

I only do 5k a year but the car gets an annual inspection and a oil change if it's not due a service - not worth taking the risk for £100/year

Many thanks for the quick replies. It's great to get such a rapid response.

The handbook says remarkably little about servicing (as you guys probably know); the only concrete statements seem to be in the guarantee and maintenance booklet, which specifies 20,000 miles / no later than 2 years for the first service.

But I'm definitely going to get an inspection and oil / filter change done within 12 months (probably just before Christmas, in fact, all being well). I just can't feel comfortable with the idea of running a new car on the same oil for up to two years ....

If its a 997 you have bought, sounds like it,then the servicing is indeed every 2 years or 20,000 miles.
The 2 years i dont have a problem with but 20,000 is a lot on the same oil isnt it !
I'd get an oil change every 10,000 along with the 20,000 service if i did 20,000 in 2 years.
If you are doing 5000 a year,i wouldnt worry about it and just do the 2 year service when you hit 10,000 miles.

Unfortunately you are wrong mate.And thank god you are because;

It says that if you do less than 9000 miles a year,at the 12 month point you can get the £100 check done, which doesnt include any oil change, but then at 12000 miles you go and get the 12000 mile service done.
So a bit stupid really as you could go in at 8000 miles and do a stupid £100 check and then come back 4000 miles later and get the 12000 mile service done.
Best to avoid the £100 check altogether and just service at 12000 miles as it says do the service at 12000 miles or at the latest at the 2 year point.

Otherwise you would have people doing £100 checks at say 8000 miles and then not coming back till the next service by when you could have done another 12000 miles and then you have done 20,000 miles without clean oil.

Roll on new engine !!

The above is for a 996 by the way not a 997

The 997 is every 20,000 miles.
