After a few weeks of potential scammers, the car has eventually gone - Sold to the 1st person who actually bothered to come to see it.
The Guy travelled up from Dorset to Kent and offered me on the car almost straight away.
Money was 'CHAPS'd over the next day, cleared by 5pm and he picked the car up at 7pm.
So, good experience in all, made a good £4k over the Trade bid, with fairly little hassle.
Must admit having a slightly 'sick' feeling when the car disappeared up the road, but it only lasted 5 mins, and then I was back indoors searching for the next 'toy'...
Mmmmmm - What to buy...scratchchin

Thanks Guys - I guess it was the right spec in the end, which makes things a whole lot easier.
Just wanted to post, to show that if you follows certain rules, there's no need to be put off by the potential negatives. Plus there's another few k's to put towards the next one....thumbup

just for my research purposes do you mind me asking what you knocked off the asking price?

Glad to hear it and pokes a stick into the eye of Henry et al. All the scaremongering of selling a car privately is ridiculous. Its a satisfying feeling knowing you have achieved a fair price for a well looked after car then the insulting bids provided by the trade these days.

What was it and what are you replacing it with?

Hey, I see a couple of Duke's in your picture. I been running a ST2 for the past few years. A bit outdated some might say but its chipped and piped, handles like a dream, the mid range is very punchy, and you can ride all day in comfort !!

Adam - I was a bit gutted actually, because I'd just reduced the price by £1k, and this was the ad the guy answered.
Basically the car was up for £40995 and it sold for £40k....best trade bid was £37k from East London OPC, but I think they probably had a customer waiting - other (!) trade bids were around the £34-36k mark.

Both the Dukes are gone now - One was an original 916SP and the other, a nicely modified Monster S4 (916 engine). I do miss the bikes, but don't get enough time to ride bikes and drive nice cars....!

Here it is...

www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/117371.htm

Not sure what to get yet. Have been thinking of a more classic type car, possibly an early 911S, or E-type, or even an older Ferrari (308/328)....
Any Ideas / Thoughts welcome......idea

I went to Nigeria last year, found a very amicable lady in a bar who, for the princely sum of twenty quid, allowed me the use of her body. No condom & I`m not riddled with aids. One can only assume all the bollox about safe sex is rubbish, even in Nigeria, a country supposedly awash with the stuff.

The things we point out happen, it isn`t the garden of Eden you seem to think it is in your dream world. Indeed am I not correct in saying that Mark, on this very sale, was approached at least once by someone trying to obtain his car fraudulantly? www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=343129

Please don`t shoot me down for alerting people to possible scams and problems (I also include a large section on what can go wrong when dealing with the trade). www.911virgin.com/buyer.htm

You may know everything there is to know about buying and selling cars but others don`t and surely that`s the whole point about a site like this, sharing knowledge.

Henry

Hey Mark, so the bids were 10-15% off what you got privately?

Was this a straight 'sell' or a trade-in?

And dealers who offer 20-25% below the forecourt prices aren't commiting fraud? The only difference is that as usual businesses are allowed to get away with it by living off the inexperienced or uninitiated of which there are many.

I've NEVER had a problem selling any of my cars privately. Bad experiences are the exception to the rule, so your reference to the whore isn't valid here.

I have a friend who runs 'Supercar Finance' - he financed a guy on one of my previous cars, so I've kept in contact since.

Henry - your's is a valid point, if not maybe a little overstated..scratchchin
I was approached by several potential 'scammers' - they all received similar 'tongue in cheek' responses. But in all honesty, you'd have to be fairly gullible to fall for their patter....

My advice is, take all sensible precautions - try to 'suss' out the genuiness of people who come to view, and don't let your car go until fund are properly 'cleared'.

Just owning one of these cars give you potential for 'car jacking', or being followed home etc etc..... I'm not sure it's correct to push the point and 'scaremonger' in such an over stated fashion purely from a selling point of view.

Just out of interest Henry, do you point out these potential fitfalls when selling a car? Like I said there have been many reports of 'CarJacking' etc from owners of desirable car.... !

The press covers things like car jacking very well and so it doesn`t need me to say anything. The nature of fraud means the victim feels they are to blame and keeps it quiet in the same way a victim of bullying does. For that reason I want to get it out there in the public domain.

You sold the car for 40k, your best bid in the trade was 37k so where does 20-25% discounted trade bids come from, that looks like 7.5% to me. Yes, some of the trade value certain cars differently and have some cars they aren`t the best buyers of, other cars that form their "key" stock will attract better bids.

good car for good value - a win/win situation - if it had had PCM I might have been up and sod the family angle (differnet thread)

to Henry - your site provides a very useful resource for warning of selling pitfalls, its the onus put on them by dealers that I believe is over-stated (witness the immediacy of your reply to a thread re. a successful private sale)

All.......

I think Henry's views should be taken with the interestr in all of us, the he obviosuly feels worth posting in here for. He is the only Porsche dealer here talking to us is he not?

I for one don't agree all the time with what he sayd but let us maybe take the information he provides for us and use it properly.

He is a business man and falls under a different approach to selling I feel, so lets go easy on the guy eh?

He is not but that does not lessen the value of his and the other dealers' contributions here.
