What spec has a 997S got over a 997
Discussion
Don't do it.
There are lots of 997C2S cars around the £55 - £57k mark that are highly specced. Mine is a 2005 model with parkAssist, SatNav, electric seats, sunroof, Bose sound upgrade, heated seats, rear wiper, Sport Chrono Plus, etc etc and I'd expect it to be worth about 57k private sale.
Go for a slightly older year (2005) and save yourself thousands - mine's now done 16k miles but if I washed it etc you'd struggle to tell it apart from a new one. A private plate can be had for £300 if you want to hide its age.
As long as the car has an OPC warranty (which any 2005 car will) there is no point paying massive premiums to an OPC.

It's actually a Nov '04 car! Must be one of the first. I didn't think it was that bad a price (OPC warranty etc.) It's only done 5000 miles in its favour. Probably a bu88er to shift with no spec though. Trouble is I'm in Edinburgh so to drive down south to be offered an unknown price for my Boxster sounds like a recipe for a crap weekend and 900 mile drive!
I have a 997S - I tried both cars for a long weekend before I bought one - and glad I opted for S - it does have that extra performance. The price went up on the S in October 2005 - by £1500 .. and you got little more than an MP3 player thown in for the pleasure. If you are buying nearly new, make sure is has the Chrono sports set up and sports exhausts - the noise is awesome. Thereafter - have what you like. My mate bought the same car without it .. he had it back in Porsche after 3 weeks to have it all fitted as he couldn`t believe the sound difference! When you put the car in sports mode, it opens the butterfly valves on the exhausts and it howls ... almost as nice as a Ferrari.

Nicer, it's a flat six after all...

£55k for a Nov 04 with no options...???
Trust me - you'd be mad to touch it. Just check out the PH classifieds and you'll find tons of much better examples. Also, forget the mileage - 5k vs. 15k makes no difference in a 997C2S. First service isn't until 20k miles!

agreed on the sports exhaust but this reads like you ned the sports chrono too which you don't.
S adds Xenons, PASM, 19" wheels instead of 18", white dials, sprts steering wheel (much nicer to hold), red calipers, 4 exhaust tips

The chrono is still a really nice thing to have. Not for the bl**dy acne spot on the dash but the more agressive programming of the right pedal. The car feels much, much quicker and responsive than without.
OK, you've talked me out of it. There is bu88er all choice at the moment up here, but will bide my time.
Phoned the dealer and it's blue leather which I don't think I'd like and has already been reduced from £58k !!
Out of interest, what would any of the traders on here give for the 04 997s 5k miles silver/blue no spec. assuming they'd touch it with a sh1tty stick!
Re the sports chrono, does it improve the low down response. I had a shot of a 997s (not long enough - only about 30 mins) but I was surprised that nothing much happened till 5000 rpm, then it took off.

Got to agree, sports chrono and sports exhaust are essential. I never had mine out of sport mode, the throttle response is so much better. I originally got mine without the sports exhaust because it wasnt available at the time - never regretted the retro-fit even though it cost an arm and a leg.

You must be rather spoilt then. What have you driven right before the 997S, a Veyron?...

Really was not that impressed with the sports chrono difference (PASM much more worthwhile). I would not spec chrono myself but seeing as I am never going to buy a new Porsche again (pools win excepting) I woudl consider it a nice-to-have if someone else has paid for.
A poverty spec 997S esp. w/o nav module will be a bugger to shift IMHO - why buy that when options depreciate so much you will get a top spec car for £1k more?
edited to say obviously if it is much much cheaper then it is a different decision
