Ok the main bits were said in the other thread, which were:

Proposal 1: Cannonball Shootout

Quite simply, every car in the series runs a set amount of runs (Normally 3 runs for a 2 day meet and 5 runs for a 3 day meet) and each drivers E.T throughout the rounds are added together. At the end of the last round, every drivers E.T's are totalled and the two drivers who are numerically lowest pair off for a final at the end of the last day. If they have broken, to make sure a final is run the next lowest numerically which is still ready to run will run the final.

Proposal 2: The 'USA' Way

The second way is that everyone runs in their allocated run times, running their total depending on length of the meeting (2-3 day etc..) and at the end of the last qualifier run each of the drivers quickest runs are picked out and whichever two drivers had the quickest E.T at any point in the weekend who are still running run the final.

My personal opinion on the matter is that we run the Cannonball Shootout; The pro's of this style is that the way to win is to be consistently quick, not just have a single loaded run and then sit out the rest of the weekend and wait for the final. The cannonball shootout would lead to more people going out every round to race in front of the crowd and keep the excellent standard we put on as a class to all the fans. Everyone will still get the same amount of runs as of over the last two years and also make it more competitive.

Plus a cannonball shootout is more fun! Throwback to the good old days of the Fuel and Alky coupes slugging it out.

Please post your thoughts on the matter.

I'm with Joe; I think the Cannonball would be a better formula

it brings consistency into the mix, if you want to win you have to perform every run; I remember watching the cannonball growing up around the sport and it was always one of the best events to watch, you've got the element of suspense as run by run you can see who needs to do what and also as Joe said people can't lay down one quick run and sit out (not suggesting anyone would)

everyone still gets to run 3/5 times a meeting, you get a winner and runner up at the end and the fans get hard racing

as a fan of the class it's what I would prefer to see, and if I was competing in the NFAA then its how I would prefer to race

I agree with both Joe and Adam, the cannonball option gives smaller teams like ours to have a real chance to make the final!

When the two teams make the final do the other cars in the class get to run before the two with the lowest e.ts??

No, it will be just the final two. That way everyone can see that it's the final ... not the final pair!

I am in no way involved in NFAA, but would like to include my opinion :
I also would vote for the traditional "Cannonball" style,
for reasons already mentioned in posts above.
For the finals, a suggestion :
On sunday at noon, first the "B" Final between the #3 and #4 of the list.
Then in the afternoon the "A" Final between the #2 and #1 on the list.
I am sure the announcers can make sure the crowd gets the correct info what is what.
Cheers,
Benni

Seems a bit unfair to the Nitro Drivers to me, how are they expected to actually get 3 or 5 full runs in, the Methanol drivers would walk away with it!!.

Joking aside I think a Cannonball type affair with a heads up final would be great, It would proberbly make it easier for the fans to understand as well, as I have never totally understood how you arrive at a winner in NFAA.

With Joe all the way. Yes the alky cars are more consistent but a fuel car should run a 6.8(min) with ease every round with no damage and a nice cup of tea after.

How many times did you see Spuf and Kagerad in the final during the 90's?

I do def think that the points need to change as last year was won on burnouts which for those of you that don’t know does alot of damage as your valve train is under no load and flapping about like a swan.

To me last year also proved that no matter what points system you have be it for crowd or racers then there will be damage, it is inevitable in any form of racing.

A championship should be won with racing simple as that drag racing as a whole apart from dial in stuff is about getting to the other end before the other lane end of, yes burnouts are great and look good and if we wanted to we could do an 1/8th mile one every round but this is not racing.

Crowds love it and I am all for pleasing the crown but would rather make them cheer with side by side 6’s than side by side breakages………..I mean burnouts.

I'm in agreement with the general consensus then - I think the Cannonball style discussed above benefits from promoting consistency and encouraging all cars to perform in all rounds.

I would also say however that I would like to see some element of showmanship retained (awards for style / burnout etc), possibly only as a side-trophy for the event if people feel they shouldn't contribute to the championship - I am only talking as a fan of the class here and anything that encourages Freddy Fagerstrom burnouts is fine by me! I accept Luke's point about valvetrain damage though, hence why it might be better as a side award.

To respond to all Drivers and fans of the awful, awfuls.....

As you say Joe, - better with it's own thread.

Hmmm, some interesting views that need serious consideration.

We are getting over the gestation period (I hope) and I really hope that enough teams will turn up regularly to swell the numbers. A 16 car field would be great!

We mustn't forget though, that we are a demo/exhibition class and IMHO the showmanship aspects of burn-outs and best appearing car/crew should be retained - there is no question that this is something that Joe Public wants to see.

Althought we are a demo class, accumulating points for a season end championship, I cannot believe that anyone could doubt that you guys are racing each other and no one should doubt your committment to winning your round.

Incidentally, the format we have used thus far, ie, a season long points accumulator championship (Sportsman Class) is quite common in the States - see this months DragRacing Action.

We just need to 'fine-tune' the method and points allocation.....

I'm kind of busy at the moment, putting the last minute touches to the arrangements for the NFAA Awards Evening - about 100 strong to date and tables and menus are about to be finalised - so I will get back to it soonest.

Regards to all.

I agree the showmanship side of it should stay as the crowd do love big burnouts and a good appearing crew helps present the class professionally but points for best appearing crew seems like its a way to buy points which for any class can't be good

for burnouts I would see it better as a trophy or much smaller points win, and rather than burnout of the round maybe burnout of the meeting

Didn't realise that burnouts did quite as much damage as that. Makes you wonder why Fuel FC's did TWO burnouts back in the 1970's.

Nitro get there power in a different way, alky motors have to rev to get power. Hence Top methanol motors reving to near on 11,000rpm

But any time that the motor is not under load is not good, its why we only did short burnouts last year, apart from the one we did a shakey late in year which went to about 3/4 track!

cannonball,
losing a championship
because you wasnt wearing a new shirt or not the shirt that some people favour,
is not the way i like to go racing.
i believe the points system needs to be addressed
for the class to progress.
