GT3 people - can you explain...
Discussion
Why the prices of Mark 1 and Mark 2 GT3s are now so close.
It seems you can get a two or three year old Mark 2 in the high 40K mark. To my layman's eyes this seems a bit of a bargain.
Whereas Marks 1s are still very much in the early forties. So its a 4-5K difference between the two types.
Seems a very small difference considering the Marks 1s are now six to eight years old.
Is the Mark 1 really that much better?
Were they made in much smaller numbers?

Market forces. MK2 marginally better on paper (ie brakes, a bit more T|Q and HP). BUT, less MK1s were made and some people prefer the MK1 looks.
I think they're both great cars. I feel pretty lucky to have a MK1 in the garage.

Cheers John, I would feel very happy to have either in my garage as well
I just to me looks like the Mark IIs are mega value for money at the mo.
Mk1 was the last hand built Porsche.
Mk2 marginally faster.
Mk1 more raw and visceral (more mechanical, no e-Gas etc)
Mk2 better built.
Mk1 the original GT3.
Mk2 has cupholders.
Mk1 more cohesive design.
Mk2 sharper clothes/nicer headlamps.
Mk1 built in limited numbers.
Mk2 more robust gearbox.
Mk1 better feeling gearbox.
Mk2 better front brakes.
Mk1 a true homologation car.
Mk2 a better car
Mk1 a better GT3 ?

Like I said they're both awesome machines and I'm not looking to cause a barny between Mark 1 and Mark 2 owners
Just interested in the reasons behind their comparative second-hand prices - they both seem bargains to me when you consider a specced 997 GT3 is not far off 90K.
I didn't realise that the Mark 1s were handbuilt by the racing department. That is impressive and certainly adds something to the legend.

Had a Mk1 for 2 years. Have a Mk2 now.
Both great but consider Mk2 the best value of the bunch for a car half the age and only £5-10k more. That's before you even consider the upgraded engine, gearbox and brakes. Not that much different in UK rarity either (103 vs 221, Porsche GB figs).....A Mk2 looks much rarer though with so many standard 996's around now wearing mk1 GT3 bodykits.

Heck, the Mk1 STARTED the legend!
I do agree that the Mk2 is excellent value. On paper/forum, it's hard to assess as each car has a slightly different and distinguishable character. If you drive both, you'll come away prefering one more than the other and know which one is the one you prefer.
By now the gearbox will probably need some work so just put the steel shyncros... Then off to Manthey for the K400 kit... Brake discs will need replacing as well so Brembos or Alcons will do... Mk1 is now much better than Mk2 and still hand built at the race shop!!!
Anyway both are outstanding machines...

Apart from the NOISE, the additional torque low down and through the midrange is the most noticeable thing with the K400. With the additional torque, make sure your rear diff is sorted... Mine needed replacing within a few weeks! I'd recommend getting the suspension sorted too to handle the additional power/torque. Manthey KWs make a big difference compared to OEM (especially when OEM might be worn out).
Now you gave me a solution for 2 problems: since the girlfriend is always complaining about the 'investments' in the Porsche and the Manthey suspension is somehow expensive I'll SELL the girlfriend and buy the all kit!!!
For now it's just Pagid Orange and off to Montmelo on Saturday...

So it seems, the 'bespokeness', looks and extra rarity of the Mark 1 are the defining factors.
With all the above in mind, the following looks just mega, mega value for money.

Great colour too, IMO

So a MK1 with more hp than a Mk2 (or even RS), with steel synchros and gear box radiator and Alcon floating brakes must be both a better car and a better GT3 ? ;-)
