Hi Guys,

A few questions regarding the 996GT3RS

The alloy wheels appear to have an unlacquered outer rim? is this the case and if so how do you keep the alloy in good condition?

Does the underbody have any underseal/protection from the roads/salt etc?

The exhaust on the car I was looking at is a Porsche exhaust (same tailpipes as my non RS GT3) but it sounded louder on start up, according to an OPC the car was not fitted with PSE as an option, is the standard RS exhaust noticeably louder than a normal Mk2 GT3?

Do you get any problems with sealing on the plastic rear window?

TIA

The alloys all have problems with corrosion. Porsche are not being helpful. The outer is actually a special finish whose name I've forgotten - its a type of metal paint. They cost 350+vat a corner to refurb to as new. The inner is just laquered.

Underbody has no underseal, but is galvanised + painted. You can always get it undersealed if you want. Some have been.

Exhaust should be the same. The flywheel makes the engine a bit noisier though.

No problem with the rear window. Just clean it with furniture polish (apparently).

cheers Dan

Does that mean that the alloys do not need any special attention?

So the underside is the same as the normal 3?

Visit the Titanic site and see what they have been saying about thses wheels for months now. Bottom line is the inner rims will craze badly after a very short period of time and Porsche don't want to know about remedying what the owners are saying is something that is not fit for purpose, amongst other things. I think Tim Chandler is taking the matter to Court because he is so incensed at Porsches couldn't care less attitude. I get the feeling that provided they are refurbished properly they should be no worse than any other wheel. Sadly the refurb costs around £1400 a seteek

Steve,

Cheers for the reply, I find the Titanic site difficult to navigate, I have joined but it doesn't seem to be like other forums?

Does the outer "metal finish" look need any other protection against brake dust etc?

I also had a massive problem when I curbed my front two RS wheels at an exit from a multistory (Don't ask!).
Basically, Porsches answer was to replace them at a cost of about £1k each.

multistorys! the bane of my wheel curbing life! Have managed to do three alloys on different cars going into or coming out of them! So what did you do with them? Refurb?

poon - assume the alloys will degrade if you track the car. So I don't give them special attention just clean them as per normal, and I have some zymol stuff I put on after cleaning that helps make dirt easier to shift next time. I'm not the most religious about cleaning my car regularly though.

A normal 3 has underseal. The RS doesn't, it also has less sound deadening which may help explain why it seemed louder to you.

The fact that Porsche don't know how to refurb these wheels is probably part of why they are being so difficult. The alloys sell for 3.2k a set IIRC and thats if your dealer does you a favour!

Dan,

I have a spare set of alloys that have Toyo's on and will use these on track with the RS, so if I am understanding it correctly the outer rim doesn't need anymore attention than a standard 3 wheel. I also Zymol my wheels and use the extra spray stuff that supposedl makes them easier to clean?

Would you recommend undersealing the car? Waxoyl?

The wheels need no more attention than any other wheel, but bare in mind the laquer behind the spokes has a problem on all the wheels, and will allow corrosion to form underneath. It ends up looking a bit like mold on seriously affected cars.

Your choice on the underseal. I'm leaving mine alone for the moment and I jet wash underneath every so often.
