I know that 911's were used in rallying from the 60's right through to the mid 80's. But have you ever seen a 996 on the loose stuff?

This is the sort of car needed in the WRC to make it interesting again. I know they'd have no chance against a 4wd WRC car on a loose surface, but on tarmac they might get close. Can you imagine a class for NA 2wd cars with GT3's, M3's etc.? That would be worth seeing...

Yes! GT3 vs Aston V8 on the rally stage. Come on Prodrive et al, ditch the Scoobies and Citroens etc. You know it makes sense.

And for your further delectation .........the onboard version (crank up the volume and find the hardest most uncomfortable seat in the house/office) a modern WRC cars' susension would be a magic carpet ride in comparison with the GT3s http://videos.streetfire.net/category

Actually a few years back C&CC did a comparison test that included a 996tt and ISTR a hyundai WRC car that cost £300K. The test route included some loosish stuff. The result was that the bog standard turbo is as quick as £300K worth or WRC tool. Was quite shocking reading and reminds one how incredible these cars are.

Walter Rohrl ran as course car on the inaugural Rally Deutschland back in 2002 IIRC.
He did so in a factory Mk1 GT3 converted specially for the event, he set times on several stages (the faster open ones where the GT3s higher top speed would have been beneficial) which would have put him in amongst those set by the top five 4WD WRC cars yikes driving

Exactly - lets see some of this stuff on the rally circuit. Who really wants to watch a load of specialist rally machines toshed up to look like Ford Focusses and so on. Who cares? What a yawn! Lets see some real cars have a go!

hehe excellent stuff.

Would be great to see another rally class out there with the WRC boys, or another series competing against them. How does 2wd/400bhp/1300kg sound for a basic car formula?

The 959 was built as a Group B rally car, so we know Porsche have thought about it previously.
