Two questions, folks:

1)Is there an easy way to get some more power out of a 944 2.5 ltire single cam engine?

2)How easy is it to change the cylinder head studs? Mine have rusted due to gasket leak and become waisted. I appreciate they go right through the engine and double as main bearing bolts. Would I be right in assuming they are threaded into the block, screwed down on to a shoulder and come out upwards?

1) Not much, not easily. Enjoy the car for what it is, remove weight if every tenth counts

2) Could you be thinking of the Rover K-Series? AFAIK there's nothing complicated about replacing the head studs.

Well thank you for a frank reply to my first question. Much appreciated.

As to the second question, no it is the same 944 engine.

You can chip the ECU which may add a few bhp, the standard induction & exhaust are well designed & you won't gain much if anything with a cone filter & aftermarket exhaust but you can make it sound nicer. One popular engine mod is a 'throttle cam' which won't add power but will make the throttle pedal more responsive through the first half of it's travel but really, all this adds up to very little extra power & you may even lose torque with a cone filter if the air flow path isn't smooth.

There's quite a bit you can do to the chassis that can significantly improve on the standard Lux setup.

The cylinder head studs are not connected to the main bearings which sit in a seperate ladder casting bolted up from underneath.

They can be replaced by unscrewing but sometimes the next fit is not as tight and they can strip. However if this happens there is still a solution to overcome the problem.

Best advice is as stated by others - they are right - lop off the weight!
