I'm looking for a bit of reassurance; my Chimaera is due to get serviced this month so I'm been ignoring a slight tapping noise (which is now not so slight) for a few weeks on the presumption it's the manifold gasket. However, it does sound to be coming from under the rocker cover and sounds horribly mechanical.

When I remove a particular plug lead on the same side as the noise, it quietens drastically but doesn't go away altogether.

So, the question is, have I found where the leak is or is something massively more expensive on that cylinder?

They do sound horribly mechanical so it may still be the gasket, but to be on the safe side I would bring the service forward or at least get an expert to listen to it and tell you whether it's something that can wait.

Thanks for that - I'll get onto the garage tomorrow and book the service.

Other than one cylinder being much worse than the others, is does seem to have the usual manifold gasket symptoms - it's louder when the car is cold, isn't audible when coasting and increases in volume under load, so fingers crossed!

Did you ever find out what this was and whether removing was actually related to the gasket ?

I would be very wary of what your mechanic says when you take it in for a service. With the best will in the world, they have been known to diagnose our leaky gaskets as soemthing much more serious, with expensive consequences. I have no idea who your mechanic is, he may be excellent and have good experience of TVRs but just something to bear in mind as its happened in the past.

I pinpointed my manifold leak location easily using a method I devised. It's listed as 'How to find that elusive manifold leak' and the photos just above the link here

Sorry for the hijack, Mine also has a tapping noise.
More noticesable when hot than cold. Sounds like a tappet but I have had the cam changed along with followers. Anyone got any ideas?

You may. I got them from a drawer in one of the labs I manage but I'm guessing that's not very helpful to you.

I borrowed your method but didn't have any bungs.

Wrapping the exhausts in lots of duck tape worked pretty well though.

Anyone got any ideas about my tapping noise? I have noticed that the tapping that can be heard also occurs when you turn the engine off. Just before the engine stops turning you hear the tap one last time. If that makes sense?

Could it be the tensioner? or something more costly? frown
