What a sense of accomplishment and relief. I managed to go round the block once, ran out of gas and coasted to my driveway. All that running in the garage must have used 5 gallons. Then I drove it to the gas (Petrol) station. I managed to give it a slight boot in 1st and second. "Road Rocket" is a good description. Spins the tires rather easily, while planting you back in the seat. I've still got a few loose ends to tie up, stainless tail pipes are being fabricated next week and need to install the passenger seat and rear body screens.

Did you manage to get enough gas in it to get back home?
After all, you didn't go back by the direct route did you?
Well done.

I came to a stop in front of my house after circulating the block once. Put another 5 gallons in an off to the station. The Quaife (Torsen style) diff keeps it straight when the wheels spin, which is nice, compared to a normal ltd slip.

Those Quaife diffs are suberb for allowing nice drifts and keeping the car straight if you get wheel spin

Great job getting your car to work. (I've been quietly watching this forum for about 2 weeks, and have finally posted.)

If anyone needs more grip, 2 types of DOT-legal Hoosiers fit the Ultima stock front/rear sizes! ;-) Supposedly, they're about the LEAST-streetable DOT-legal tread, though!
Or, maybe Jeff's gears just aren't tall enough for best performance (but are low enough to help your left leg anytime you get into crawling, 3-5 MPH traffic ;-) ). Assuming this car has the G50: Doesn't that sound cool, to have a car whose first gear should redline at a HIGHER speed than a Porsche's? ;-)
I'm not sure if this helps Jeff's car or if his car's gears are THIS extremely under-driven, but I think a bone-stock G50 in the Ultima would *often* have this problem: Ideally, a car should use a diff gear so that 2nd gear can't cause much wheelspin on dry, new asphalt (except for a moment, as you're power-shifting), but so that 1st CAN -- because it's simply useless to have both gears able to spin the wheels, cuz all you're doing, then, is spinning through first, losing about a half-second as you shift, then spinning some MORE... :-) i.e., If you could easily spin 'em whilst starting in second, you MAY AS WELL start in second and save yourself the lost time (and a possible mis-shift, etc.), PLUS dump the weight of the extra gearset, since you don't really need 1st, and with such a low diff-gear, all 1st does is weigh you down (except whilst in traffic, where starting in 1st would save your clutch a little, and let you 'creep' at <5 MPH...) But each owner has to decide for himself whether the extra gear is worth its expense & weight, if 2nd can easily light the rear tires, but you drive in traffic a lot...

But I have a question about Quaife's: While they give more stability under acceleration, is it true that they give LESS stability under decel, and give you more TTO (trailing-throttle oversteer)?

I've got a g50/52. I've regeared it, the ratios are nearly identical to the C5 1997-2003 Corvette's 1st-5th.
1st is a 2.62 or 2.64 as I recall. Final Drive is a 3.44
The roads were pretty cold the other day. The temp was just above freezing. I'm sure on warm days it'll hook better.
The Quaife keeps the handling neutral under all conditions.

Nice going Jeff. Hope it's fun all the way!

Hoosiers are really sticky tyres, usually crossply if I recall and I'm not sure how much steel belting they have? Still, if one goes flat you can call the AA as I don't suppose the ultima carries a spare.

I drove it around a bit more the other day. Still trying to optimize shift linkage adjustments. Boy, this thing sure turns heads. Reminds me of when my friend loaned me his real Countach for the weekend about 20 years ago. This is Loads faster though.

Got mine fired up for first time today as well. Got a short private road to play on before road legal. "Only" 413hp (Real Steel built 350) but still feels pretty quick. I appear to have the stalling under heavy braking problem discussed elsewhere (will modify driving technique and save up for FI) but otherwise all seems OK. Just a few bits and pieces to tidy up and SVA permitting, should be out and about in NE Scotland in next few weeks.

Jeff and George.
Best of luck and congratulations on your new mounts.
I've done some driving around Scotland. Your car George, will certainly stand out. As for you, Jeff, driving around Chicago should get you a lot of offers!!
I'm tempted to rush mine out on the street now, but still want to make sure I'll have 1000 hours into the build.
regards
Jack
