Hi Guys,

Just about to ship my Chimaera out to Sydney so wanted to see if there are any TVR drivers out this way. Haven't seen one since returning here 3 months ago and wouldn't mind catching up or at least seeing some fellow owners down under.
Any help?

Hi Guys,

Haven't visited for a while as things were going along swimingly until recently.
I am an Australian who had lived in London, UK for 7 years up until December 2006. I fell in love with and bought my first Chimaera in March 2006 with the dream of shipping it to my home (Sydney, Australia), and cruising in it for the rest of my life.

I am having a couple of problems getting import approval for my Chimaera from the UK to Australia. Although I have currently owned the car for more than a year, Australian Customs insist that to ship this car to Australia, it must have been owned and used continually for a period of 12 months. As I only “used” the car for 10 months before leaving the UK unexpectedly, when I applied to ship the car in June of this year, my import application was refused due to this technicality.

Now, it seems as though the only way for this import request to be approved, is to go back to the UK for another 12 months (continually), and then reapply. This is unfortunately not possible.

However, I heard that there might be a way around this regulation, and that is to have a “registered TVR automotive workshop” in Australia make any necessary modifications that are required to comply with Australian specifications. Apparently this is sufficient to allow the car to be approved by customs.

I wanted to appeal for any help you might be able to give me in this situation that may help me get over this rather large obstacle. If you know of any official TVR workshops or dealerships that may fit the above criteria, or have any advice from previous situations where individuals have overcome similar obstacles, I would very much appreciate any information you can pass on.

Unfortunately at the moment, it looks as though the only course of action for me is to sell the TVR unless I can sort this out – which I really am not keen on doing L

Thanks for your time with this – any help would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to hopefully hearing something soon.

Can't offer any current knowledge, but I think you might be out of luck. A friend's daughter had lived in England for a couple of years, brought her car back to Perth with her, ended up having to send it back to England as she hadn't been with the car continuously; she had gone to Europe for a couple of weeks in the preceding year...

It looks like they are saying that now it is no longer eligable to enter the country as a personal import, it now has to come in under the RAWS / SEVS scheme.

If so then I am thinking the words 'good luck' apply frown

For a car to come in as a RAWS / SEVS import a few things need to happen (as I understand it):

. An importer applies to the government to have a car added to a register of cars eligable for import...Should be no worries here as TVR's have never been sold here in full volume. You might find yur car is already eligable for import and on the list.

. The car is added to the list

. The importer brings a car in and compiles an evidence pack to show the car is different to local cars and to detail the compliance work needed

. A government inspector visits the workshop to perform an audit

. The workshop is granted a license to import and comply that particular car

. The importer is then free to import and comply that car...I.E. Become a TVR importer.

So what I am getting at is that you need to find a workshop in Australia that has got the right paperwork and license to be able to RAWS comply your TVR and have it registered. The thing is though the workshops that deal in european cars a few and far between so I think you will struggle to find someone to do it.

Your other option is trying to convince a workshop to use your car as the evidence car to get the license to do it...only thing is though it costs around $50,000 to get the license so you would have to put together a damn good business case to convince them to do it!!!

Also to be RAWS elligable the car must be absolutely stock standard and with no crash history!

This is only from my limited understanding of how the system works. Try looking up a few local import workshops (they mostly deal with Jap cars but should be able to give some advice)and try wading through the government webshites.

A word of advice though...dont try and trick the sytem or make loopholes. They have REALLY tightened the belts on imports and who can bring them in and in what volumes. If you get caught out then best case senario is that YOU pay to return the car to the UK or have it destroyed here in Aus!!!

Mmm - Don't know about the 'Continually' bit.

I owned my Lotus for a couple of years before exporting to Oz. My job in London required me to travel every 2-3 weeks throughout Europe and the Middle East. So as a result my time was not continual (at all), but over the 2 years my actual ownership whilst in London was over the twelve months required - they just had to add the days up from my passport and it was over 365.

A couple of things;
Deviant, you're correct, I didn't think about the fact that TVR's weren't actually sold here
Simon, you may be right, the story I heard is a bit vague and it was prolly 10 years ago...

roo-man. You can appeal the decision, although as previous posts have said they are pretty strict on the 12 month rule. "Continuous" may be a an avenue to explore.

Applications for a review can be lodged with the Registrar at - Administrative Appeals Tribunal, GPO Box 9955,Sydney. Phone on 1300 366700. As always there will be a fee no doubt. Good Luck mate I think your gonna need it.

As I understand it.

You need to own and use the car for 12 months, it does not need to be continuous. You do not need to be with the car for the whole 12 months. If you leave the country on business, that is fine. You must document the time you are in and out of the country and give reasons for absenece. You must be able to show you used the car while you owned it, for example, insurance, mot, service docs.

However, as you only had the car for 9 months before coming back to OZ, you will be required to go back to the UK for 3 months, fairly certain of that.
