I simply want to replace the existing, stock Pioneers with something more capable on the bass ... no amps, subwoofers, etc ... any thoughts or experiences so I can do it myself this weekend?

I posted something last week..on this.. I'm sure the bass is pants because the speaker is fibre glassed behaind and so no air movement is possible.. in theory if you hack out the fibre glass then Bass will improve.. I've yet to try need a sunny day and some time

That's right, I remember reading that one - very interesting. I guess my query comes from a slightly different perspective, in that the speakers themselves are most likely (haven't had door skin off yet so can't be sure) a certain depth and width - and can I assume that if I spend around £50 on a good pair, same size, that I'll get better sound/bass response as long as I remove the fibre-dome behind it?

you are correct and i have already done this, but when you remove the fibreglass dome you will gain more depth for the speaker/magnet
