Hello all, I'll be hoping to start my Ultima build sometime this year, but don't expect to finish for some 3-6 years! The reason for this is that I have other toys that I like to play with and only so much money and so much time, spreading myself out over them all can slow things down a little...

I know that at least one other chap has taken 6 years to complete a build, does anyone know if there were any issues with components expiring during the build, e.g. seals, glues etc? I know some things don't like being left in one position for too long without oil or movement (e.g. electrics).

very good post i am thinking the same, building a GTR on a budget and with a long time scale, i appreciate that they will probably have another updated model out when i finish but will the parts still be available?

It took me about 2 years to complete, so not quite in the same long term league.
You should be able to get on with the time consuming stuff (chassis panelling and body fitting) while spending as little as possible. However, you will have to invest in assorted bits and pieces upfront which may not have to be final fitted until later (eg, need gear linkage to get holes lined up in the panels, need suspension, brakes, steering wheels and tyres before fitting body etc etc). The engine, box, exhaust, d/shafts, dampers can be left late, these are expensive and won't appreciate being left unused for a long time.
Due to poor planning I bought some components which were not fitted for a year - not very efficient on cash flow. Also found I had to order a few other bits earlier than anticipated. Study the build manual and CD carefully before placing order and make a schedule for the build with bits required.
Ultima do change and improve various components all the time, but I would not expect any parts to become obsolete during the build. As long as you store your car and parts in a clean, dry place and don't let sunlight get at the rubber bits, I would not expect much deterioration although I'm not sure about six year old tyres.
Factory are very helpful, they could probably give guidance on a long term build.

You won't need the brakes up front but will need to run the brake lines.
You don't actually need the wheels to fit the body just carefull measurement.
You will need anything that passes down both sides of the chassis in order to fit the side pods correctly.

thanks guys, i am due to move soon but unsure whether to build at my mums house or build a bigger than single garage, single garage will be a squeeze but should be ok, what do u reckon?

You really need more than a single garage. I've found it a squeeze getting all of the bits in a double garage. Ultimas are wider than a big Volvo and you need the room to walk around and to work on bodywork, panels, etc.

For space reasons order your engine and gearbox as late as is possible. They're really big when stuck in their packaging!!! Having the money free helps too

The only problem I can see with a long term build (especially over that length of time) is the ongoing car development by the factory.

You may end up buying some bits which are then superceded with better items? That would be a pain.

Still, it's been done before and the car's are more evolution than revolution. Best bet would be to speak to Ted and get his views.

i understand that stig, but i am second guessing here but if yoy can still get parts for the ultima sport a long term build may end up with the same parts being available or a hybrid at worse.

but i'll speak to the factory and see.
