I think I'd want Murray and Dennis scribble rather than Andretti tbh
re Price. I suppose the better question would be. Was it comparable to others.
i.e It's not the record breaking car at circa $8M/£5M
http://www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1997-mclaren-f1/
(why was that one so much more???)
and it's not the park lane car for £2.5M

Somewhere in between or are they going higher these days?

Sorry, I meant that the gentleman that is James Cottingham would never let on that info. If I were told, I would do the same...re Price. I suppose the better question would be. Was it comparable to others.

I'd imagine, however, that it was a pretty penny or 2.... More than the £2.5m for the 'Park Lane car' and around the £5m+ mark, if not slightly more as the market has moved a fair bit since then.

Personally endorsed by the man who drove it in and vigorously flogged by charlie Ross - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxXte6Jxxl0re Price. I suppose the better question would be. Was it comparable to others.

I made that name plate
Very cool - I happen to have one of them in my collection. Funny story (kind of) - the first time I went to see this red F1 it was in the showroom at McLaren San Francisco, as the car previously belonged to the owner of that dealership. A mutual friend of the Sales Director there had alerted (read: warned) him that I was coming, so he sort of knew what to expect. Anyway, he greeted me and opened up the car and was very accommodating. Then at one point he left the room and I happened to have that door plate with me in my bag. I pulled it out and when he got back I held it up while walking towards him and said "Is it okay if I keep this part of the car as a souvenir?" His eyes got wide and he rushed past me to see if the ones attached to the car were still there. He and I have been friends ever since that moment I gave him near heart failure.

The car was built for Michael Andretti to his specifications as partial compensation for his stint with the McLaren Formula One team in 1993. He didn't keep the car as there wasn't a legal method to import it to the USA when it was completed in 1995 - selling it about a year later to avoid further storage and insurance costs. It's a pretty unique story and an important part of the history on this particular F1. Rich_W said:

You're a bit out of touch with the market for F1s based on those comments. Prices have moved considerably since the 2008 sale of the Park Lane showroom car. The Gooding car only broke the record for a public sale, and did so by more than double their previous sale in 2010 when Gooding sold another (chassis 062) for $3.575M. Actually the car sold this past August (chassis 066) was expected to sell for significantly more than it did. After the auction completed I had a discussion with Gordon Murray who was there and had presented the car with David Gooding on the stage and we were both surprised by the price given other recent transactions. Consider that one well bought even at $8.47M USD.i.e It's not the record breaking car at circa $8M/£5M

This red F1 (chassis 028) was used as a partial trade in a transaction for the previous owner to acquire a 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa and it's valuation as part of that deal was slightly more than $10M USD or £6M GBP. The new buyer likely paid a bit more on top of that as the seller of the 250 Testa Rossa did not keep the car. This price is still not the current record paid for an F1 road car and I don't see the trend of ever-increasing prices slowing down much unless there is a total market correction.

I think I've confessed it before - I made about double the number requested and gave the spares to fellow petrol heads
Unfortunately my own went in a house fire in around 1997.
Ouch - sorry to hear about the fire. I am guessing you lost a lot more than the plate. Unfortunately my own went in a house fire in around 1997.
Mine has evidence of coming off an F1 - there's double-sided tape on the underside with some flecks of silver paint that lifted off when removed and one corner is bent a bit where someone used a screwdriver to pry it up. Still a nice piece.

TBH a swap plus cash type deal always inflates value on 1 or both items. Whether it's F1&250 or 320d+cash for a Golf. Or a bicycle. I'd be interested to have seen it go across the block to see where it ended at. I wonder if because most change hands out of public, that the prices may suffer a bit of "Chinese whispers" and get pushed up. >8^)

Sounds from the bit in bold that GTR's don't command the same figures? 19R sold somewhere after 2008 for under a £1M (according to the litigation that followed the car LINK anyway)
Whilst I'll never be in the market, I'd much rather have a converted GTR with (all the drawbacks compared to the road version ) simply for the pedigree
BTW

Really? Seems legit!

Longtail GTRs have never carried the same premium because they aren't as usable. Still, citing the value of a 2009 sale was ages ago in the collector car world. 28R sold by Bonhams through their Monterey auction in 2012 for $3.85M including the premium. Gooding just sold 21R earlier this year for $5.28M at their Scottsdale event. You'd like to think that auctions tell the whole story but it is one car, one example, one moment to bid. A lot more deals happen behind closed doors and don't always fall in line with what happens at those events.Watch the video on YouTube of the sale of F1 066 at Gooding last August and notice how long it took them to call the car while they waited for another bid they really thought was coming. It was about three minutes of working the room, but a lot of the big money bidders were over at RM that night. I also know the figure that car's owner was willing to sell the car for in the days leading up to his commitment to enter it in the auction, but he was drawn to the sale through Gooding under suggestions (maybe even promises?) of a bigger payday, which didn't materialize.
If you can find an F1 road car available today for less than $9M you should be buying it.

He said it was almost too fast for the road when he drove it around the TG track. I will let him disclose if he bought one or not.Do we know if he had a driveor interest I the P1?

For Flemke to tell - not me
I think the questions were whether I had driven one and whether I was getting one. I have driven one and have ordered one, to be delivered supposedly in Aug/Sept.
It is an amazing machine - the transformation from quiet, civilised tourer to warp-speed racer and back again is almost the stuff of science fiction - but the F1 is unique.
