Hi Flemke



Hope all is well with you and your cars smile I wanted to ask you how your friend is getting on with his veyron after his first set of tyres you told us all about.Has he/she had a service carried out yet ?

Flemke, do the factory still use the remote diagnositc modem system. I remember it was hyped at the time, but now-a-days it must seem very basic.



Also, is it simply a way of downloading info, or can the factory use it to run onboard systems.

We speak often, but not often about the Veyron.

I guess that goes to show what a boring car it is.

I couldn't say that they never use it, but I don't think that they often use it. They've never used it on mine or my friends'.

They have a number of service centres (Germany, New Jersey, California, Japan) which are within shouting distance of most of the cars. Normally, if you had a problem, you would take your car to a service centre and they would work straight off their own laptop, which can glean a lot more data than the modem can do.

For the few cars that are located out of the mainstream, they would probably still use the modem, although most of those cars (Bahrain, for example) don't get driven except for servicing by the factory technician, so there again no need for the modem.



I'm not certain that the system is entirely passive, but I am not aware of any ability to instruct the car remotely. I believe that this can be done only with a direct laptop link.

I suppose that one could investigate installing a more modern system that would enable remote instruction, but unless you were off in the boondocks, you'd never need it.

Flemke (or anyone else who may know),



Yesterday I was at a friend's place, and he handed me a square piece of white cardboard, about a 30cm square and 1cm thick. It had two flaps that opened to reveal a book inside, titled McLaren F1, the cover of which had a matt background and a gloss outline of the front view of an F1. I have never seen a real copy of Driving Ambition, but I don't think this was it. It was beatifully produced, and contained a lot of comments from GM and the team, plus many details on the crushable structure of the inconel exhaust, etc. Towards the back it had a page which was a photo of the gearstick, and then another page which was a semi-opaque overlay with descriptions of the parts (rather like tracing paper). Any ideas what the book is called? He believes it may have been given to all F1 owners, so I'm intrigued (incidentally, he doesn't own an F1).



After drooling over this book, I was then handed with a Japanese book about the size of a small photo album. Apparently this was a special publication from the Ueno Clinic, and is a history of the 1995 Le Mans effort, with some fantastic photos. Sadly Japanese is not part of my polyglottal armoury, so I could only enjoy the pictures.

Also I wonder if your friend would bring his Veyron to the event.. Would be a great day out to see your F1 and his Veyron side by side .

That would be the book that accompanied the introduction to the world of the car at Monaco in May, '92.

It's got some nice stuff in it, does it not?

This book has no formal title that I can see.



Driving Ambition came in four versions, IINM. One was the standard one that went through several printings by Virgin. It had 272 pages, including a good deal of what was in the Monaco book. It was available widely for a number of years.

The other three (Owner's, Le Mans and Limited Editions) all had the same contents: this comprised all the material that was in the standard version, plus maybe another 50% of drawings, photos and pull-outs.

These three differed in their cover material, and the Le Mans one came with some other goodies (original serigraph, DVD, pin). Each of the three was published in limited numbers (I think the numbers were, respectively, 100, 59 and 400).



I know nothing about the Ueno publication.

His car does not normally go to the UK.

The cars have been together before, at Hockenheim last autumn.

Thanks - I'll try to get a chance to read it properly. What I saw of it in the 15 minutes that I had was very interesting and enjoyable. It really was in perfect mint condition, which added to its specialness.

Hi Flemke,

Just want to say that you have the car of my DREAMS! (and im pretty certain that sentance has became a cliche on this site!).

I read once that the F1 you have has a faster top speed than the XP1 LM model..is that correct or was the book wrong?

One thing I've always wanted to ask is how does it feel to sit in the middle when driving? Do you often find that its more difficult to drive around, especially in city areas?

And finally...you are a VERY lucky man!

The LMs, and the GTRs, have a lower max speed than the standard F1 because of aerodynamic drag.
The front splitter, rear wing and larger cooling apertures in the front bumper and along the sides all reduce max speed.
The LM has, I believe, the same gear ratios as the standard car, but you obviously would change them in the GTRs depending on the particular circuit.

Sitting the the middle is great: it is one of the best things about the car. It felt natural from the first, and it still feels special today.

I try not to forget the luck part.wink

Out of curiosity, is it actually possible to get into and out of an F1 gracefully with the drivers seat being where it is? Looks very awkward, though I have to say, I'd be prepared to have my spine removed if that's what was required hehe
