MINT 205 GTi 1.9 wanted

Would of thought i will be hard to find a 100% mint 1.9. At the end of the day there old and not really worth a great deal, so were people have kept a mint one for years or spent a fortune restoring one they may as well hold on to it as accept a couple of grand.
Have you looked at just GTI's they are very expencive but i understand they generally have clean cars there.

may i ask what people's budget is for a mint one?
I've quite often heard of people complaining they can find a mint one and that they've been to look at loads priced between £1500 and £2000 and they all need little bits doing, is it just that this has now become the going rate for a reasonable one and a good ones worth £3k+?
At the end of the day they are 20 years old so an easily fixed minor fault isn't the end of the world as most mechanical parts are cheap.

my last one J reg 1.9 with 72k (in reasonable condition) and loads of history was valued at £3k by the insurers after loads of haggling
recently bought the cleanest 1.9 I've seen for a good while with a folder of history with 61k for £2.5k (steal of the century!) although I expect it would be worth between £3.5k and £3.75k on a payout

Took me ages to find mine, 110K G Reg 1.9 Phase 1.5 in good condition and lots of history. Low mileage is good but its not the be all and end all. Mine's done a few but its been really well looked after (i.e. not ragged about, even the gear linkages are quite tight). Just don't confuse nice paint and a coat of Zymol for a mint car!

Here is not the place to comment really (rules see), I just found looking round and being patient yielded a good result.There has been some discussion on 205gtidrivers.com that you might be able to look at.

What you pay for by going to them is 3 months warranty and a profit for them even if they have to fix stuff for you in that time.If you are happy to do that there is no reason not to use them.
From my point of view I'd rather buy a tidy car for £1k ish privately and spend the extra tarting it up (if thats your thing). For me a large part of the appeal is that I can park anywhere and not be bothered, within reason, what might happen to it.

mint cars are very hard to find and sellers charge a premium just because the gtis are quite rare but that premium does not, in my mind, offer anything like value for money.
i have seen them for sale advertised at £5K which is barking given the reputation for rot and faults, for that money i would want a photographic rebuild or a car with delivery mileage.
I would look for a car with a sound rear (chances are any crash/off has been oversteer induced) as the front panels are easily sourced and just replace parts accordingly. You can then uprate certain parts as necessary. eBay is pretty good for the hard to find parts and unless you are determined to make it as it left the factory, you should be able to build a nice car for £2K
