I spoke to a mechanic about five years ago about putting a manual five speed box in my old Daimler and was told that the best gear box for the job would be from a BMW 850 or similar and he could do it for about £4k!

This is just a casual enquiry at this point but does anyone have any idea if what i was told was accurate, and whether the figures have changed much as the price of 850's have come down?

The reason i want to turn her into a manual is i am considering making a bit of a beast out of her. Big fat alloys, loud exhaust etc.

Just for fun

I have sent both of them an email but they don't appear to do what i am looking for. One of them sells parts and the other one upgrades 3 speed auto's to 4 speed auto's by the look of it.

Anyone here actually done it?

Try Elite & Performance Jags at Derby (01332 265826). A very high-quality outfit, at reasonable cost, who are game for anything - at the moment they're working on a manual conversion for the XK8/R.

They are in the US, but they ship to the UK and the exchange rate will mean a great price

Hadn't thought of buying from the US thumbup

Obviously i would come and see you at Paramount, I love what you do but i don't have the budget at the moment.
Maybe I'll come and see you for a little exhaust work if i ever get round to doing the gearbox.

Didn't the V12 E-Types use a Getrag box.
Turning an earlier Jag V12 into a manual shouldn't be much of a problem, I wouldn't think. I don't know if it became more of an issue for the late 6L jobbies where there might be links between the ECU and the gearbox.

Had a response:

To paraphrase,

We can't do it but for £5.5k we can put a new 4 speed auto box in. eek

OOh, got a response back from him too.

To paraphrase,

"I can give you all the bits (getrag) you need for £1.4k!"

I am waiting for some info on whether that is reconditioned or used gear but it sounds promising.

Cheers all.

I have found the guy I will probably be dealing with when (and if) I get round to it.

I had this box in my modified V12E (400hp engine). The company is in the states so the exchange rate should be a bonus. IMHO Getrag/Toyota Supra boxes etc. are a compromise and not a whole lot cheaper. Also they may struggle with the torque if you are contemplating engine work.

Good luck
