Alexandre Premat Audi Sport Team Phoenix Audi A4 DTM Did not finish - crash
Adam Carroll Futurecom TME Audi A4 DTM Did not finish - crash

A big accident on lap one when Schieder (Audi) and Kristensen got together causing Kristensen to spin he kept his foot on the throttle to stop hitting the inside barrier but instead it just threw up a massive smoke cloud and speared him back into the traffic where he was collected hard by Alexandre Premat. This knocked his car round and side swiped Susis Stoddarts Mercedes and causing Adam Carrolls car damage too. All 4 out Kristensen and Premat both taken to the medical centre but they are said to be both ok.

There seems to be no news anywhere about the condition of the drivers confused. Motors were saying they were OK but that appeared to be based only on the report that the drivers were talking to medics.

It was a dreadful looking crash, the impacts must have been huge.

Thanks, I'd managed to miss that.

Fingers crossed for both of them.

Spengler penalised and loses 3rd place, drops to 14th.

DTM news said:

Bruno Spengler has lost his third place in the first round of the 2007 DTM season at Hockenheim after he was judged to have unfairly pushed Timo Scheider off on the final lap of the race. Scheider had looked to be heading for a third place finish to complete an all-Audi podium but was tagged by Spengler on the final lap when the German appeared to have completed his overtaking manoeuvre. As such, stewards have given Spengler a 50-second penalty, one that sees him plummet to the bottom of the field in 14th position, promoting Daniel La Rosa to a superb maiden podium and the honour of being the leading Mercedes driver. Alex Margaritis moves up to fourth, with Paul di Resta, Jamie Green and Bernd Schneider fifth, sixth and seventh, while Gary Paffett moves into the points in eighth as a result.

Schieder the person who tangled with Kristensen on lap 1 did exactly the very same thing, kept his foot on the throttle to keep the car on the track and try to straighten out his spin, almost collecting Daniel La Rosa who missed him by inches. Nearly a repetition of the lap one accident.

Latest news

DTM news said:

DTM debutant Alex Premat was the only serious human casualty of the opening lap accident that marred the first round of this year's DTM series, as Tom Kristensen, Adam Carroll and Susie Stoddart all escaped injury in the four-car pile-up.

After slight contact with another car, Kristensen spun at the entrance to the Parabolica and was an unavoidable target for those in the following pack. While Carroll sustained no injury at all, Kristensen and Prémat both required medical attention at the scene of the crash, before being taken to Hockenheim's on-site medical centre and, later, to local hospitals for further medical checks.

While Kristensen was found to have suffered extensive bruising, his Audi team-mate is reported to have sustained a rupture of a lumbar vertebrae in the 160kph impact. Although doctors have confirmed that the injury will not result in any permanent damage, Premat's DTM career will be put on hold for several weeks.

Must say although I appreciate Kristensen's motive in keeping it planted and recovering in shortest time possible, it was an entirely unavoidable accident.

Far too much tyre smoke generated for safety, he moved right up to the racing line with the pack mainly behind him and not reasonably expected to be single file by that point, a bit over-enthusiastic at best.

If he'd let the spin stop, then done a spin-turn as necessary there'd be hardly any tyresmoke and he'd have rejoined safely further up the track.

Easy in hindsight and therefore I'm not saying he should be clobbered for it but the authorities ought to take a dim view of any repetitions, by any driver. We've now got clear evidence of what that sort of recovery attempt does to visibility so there's no reason why a redraft of what's considered acceptable and what's not couldn't be released.
