T/A Cable Shift
Discussion
I'm about to do this. All the cable shifters that I've seen are gimbles and will work with any transmission as long as the cable travel is long enough (the pattern that the shift knob follows is determined by the transimisson, not the shifter). If you are using the side shifter modification for a G50/5x series transaxle the required cable travel is under 2 inches according to Roger Brown at California motorsports.
I am pulling my transaxle now for shipment to CA motorsports and plan on using the factory shifter as the one in development by CA motorsports is a long ways off. I would much rather use one that is made of metal but can't wait. Renegade Hybrids also sells a shifter that works with the G50/5x side shifter.
In addition to removing the bracket for the shifter the seats must be repositioned 20 mm lateral in the car.

I recall that the one Peter (ultimacz) uses will work as sequential

We have just installed a much improved version. Comes now with an electronic box and can be programmed through laptop. Possible to define gear shift times for each speed, and many other parameters. It uses also the rpm output from the engine ECU to optimise gear shifts. Result should be super short shifting.
I can send photos next week, and video hopefully also soon.

The conversion done by Califormia Motorsports needs machining and has a unit mounted on the side of the engine, operating the selectors from that side.
On the SQS racing site there's a conversion kit www.sqsracing.com/download/Conversion_kit.pdf ... this is for a VW box and is a STD VW item.... I wonder if it (or something similar) could be adapted to work on a Porsche box.
mmmm.... just did a bit of googling for "02A + Gearbox" (the type that the conversion kit is for)... and found the picture below. This is the SHAFT - type shift that the conversion kit changes to cable. You see the shaft coming from the shifter on the lower right side..... this converts the H pattern movement from one shaft to two levers (one for "in-out" and one for "left-right" ) at the box.
Now.... what if you used this in reverse.... mount it on the side of the box... cut the Ultima selector shaft and attach it to the "Shift Rod"... and you'd have your two levers (one for "in-out" and one for "left-right" ) for conection to cable shift.

Obviously this is converting the H shifting into movements in 2 cables. Surely there's a way to make a mechanism that allows for sequential shifting on a G50....
Peter..... it would seem to me that using brackets like the GT40/GTM guys, the Sequshift might work on a G50.....what do you think?

Thanks, Grant. I spoke with the guys at Renegade and Brandwood yesterday. They both have solutions. Renegade has more experience with the GTR (one in his shop at the moment). He has sold at least three setups to be used with CMS cable-shift.
That said, I spoke with CMS yesterday too. They may be closer than originally thought on their shifter. There may be a prototype as early as this week. Knowing how excellent CMS is, and since I am not in a HUGE hurry on the shifter, I am willing to wait a few more weeks to see what they come up with.
It better happen soon, though. Crap! Look what I did today!!!

My car is at Renegade right now. I should have it back for a Friday track day. Just as an FYI...
Renegade and CMS work very closely together. They both conspired to create the side shift, so in fact they are one in the same. Renegade's transaxles are built by CMS, but I believe Renegade sourced the shifter itself (With exception to clutches, mounts, etc...).
With a bit of work you can get the Renegade shifter to fit in the Getrag factory fiberglass setup. Looks very professional that way. I'll take some pictures.
Scott at Renegade has been very helpful in getting mine to work right, from what looks to be user error. I used a local Porsche race shop to install the transaxle and it appears they dropped the clutch warping the pressure plate. This caused it to not fully disengage. (wonderfull). Scott has diagnosed it, fixed it, and is trailering back for me. He's even agreed to stick around for the race and help out.

I have been talking to the guy who owns the red gtr that is featured in this months complete
kit car magazine...Him and another guy have Auto-bionics......If its a gearshifter that you are after then may be these people can help you out i know that they fabricate everything themselves....there details are in the magazine feature..

Grant,
I talked with someone that used the cable shifter that bolted to the shaft that sticks out of the back of the transaxle and was advised to stay far away from it. It was reported as feeling vague and was unreliable. Now that I've seen the photos it is apparent why, the fore/aft cable is not aligned with the direction of shaft movement and the anchors for the cables are a long way from the attachment points on the transaxle shaft.
