Just sold my porker and going to be investing a significant part of the proceeds in a new "family bus". The remaining 15K or so I will have left for a toy. My wife previously had an 02 Cooper when the new mini 1st came out and we liked it, albeit it was well underpowered. Thinking about a cooper s convertible as a reasonable toy to spend my 15K on and would welcome any thoughts from current/previous owners.

Just a personal opinion you understand but I find the MINI convertibles a bit feminine. Even my petrolhead wife needs something more butch. The fixed head versions are great. If you need an open top in this class a new big-arch MX5 would be nice. Better driver fun too being RWD. In hind sight I should have got the new model MX5 rather than my R56 MCS.

As tvrbob said the MCS drop tops are slightly girly. If it is just a piece of fluff for your wife then it will probably be a decent car to drive however the hard top ones are superior to the drop tops in handling and performance.
The mx5 is an excellent choice if looking for a drop top with the fun factor, for something more serious then try the Z4.

Hi
I bought a cooper s convertible for my wife last year. great fun car, I love driving it, but you do get a few rude comments from your mates But then I do drive it with the kiddie seat in the back. But with the roof down, sunny day, it's great, I am now trying to justify spending lots of cash on the JCW engine upgrade, so tempting.

Who cares if some people think it looks "girly"? What is this, the playground?

If you feel you need help from your car to butch up, then probably best not to get one. But if you're comfortable with your sexuality then go for it.

What a strange post! Steve asked for an opinion and got one.

So we answered. If he wanted positive comments only I'm sure he would have asked for that. By asking the question Steve is obviously interested in what the PH collective think of his choice. None of the replies were offensive.

Yeah, and he just got mine.

And who said anything about replies being offensive?

My wife had one of these, and rarely saw over 25 mpg. Just one thing to consider if you were thinking of buying it for cheap running costs!

Other than that, it was a really fun car. Have you considered the new Cooper S hatchback. Test-drove one the other day, and there is no comparison in my opinion, the new MCS is fantastic!!!! Haven't driven the old MCS hatchback tho, so it may well just be because of the soft-top blunting the handling.

I really didn't expect to like the new MCS (dragged along by the wife for a test-drive) and it really was superb!!!

The new MCS hardtop rides better, seems to have better brake response, comfier front seats ( for me ) and is certainly more economical. They've smoothed off some of the raw edges of the old s/c car. However, wouldn't say it was a "massive" difference over the old one IMO.

Not tried the convertible one though. Is it still one of the few cars you can't take your driving test in though because of the poor rear visibility?
