I tried our 'guru, but even he doesn't know the answer to this.
Can anyone give me the actual specification of the cam fitted to a 1999 John Cooper 'S-Works' engine. I'm rebuilding one at present as it won't pass the emissions test on the MoT and it needs a re-bore and lots of new bits. However, I don't want to get it all back together and find that it 'just passes', but in a couple of years it'll be over again.
Any help gratefully received.

What type of exhaust does it have?

If it's an LCB, check the pos'n of the Lambda boss, if it's on the 2into1 pipe close to the manifold it causes all sorts of problems.

It need to be on the "Y" piece.

But you prob know that already.

Workshop manual for SAXXNNAZEBD134455 states :-

Inlet opens 9 deg btdc - closes 41 abdc
Exhaust opens 55deg bbdc - closes 17 atdc

Comp ratio is 10:1

IMHO i cant see Coopers making any changes to this spec , only head and rollers etc .

Hope it helps

Thanks a lot Cone. That looks like a standard MG Metro cam, which is what the late Coopers as supposed to have. Obviously John Cooper didn't do anything to the cam.
At c.80,000 miles I guess I'll just fit a new standard cam.
I must say I didn't think much of the work done on the head on this 'S-Works' engine. The inlets are fine, but the exhaust tracts haven't been touched and are just so restrictive with the huge exhaust guide boss. The polished finish inside the chamber looks great, but that's largely unnecessary. They would have been better spending the time doing the exhaust ports properly. Still, it's just a commercial job.

I honestly don't know. I'm doing the job for a Rover specialist with whom I rally and he just wants an engine re-build to a high quality, which I shall do. The requirement is that I fit a new standard cam and standard ratio rockers. Apparently the owner, their customer, is more interested in having a 'nice', smooth and relatively standard engine which will no longer give the annual 'emmissions nightmare' as it has in the past.
The only non-standard thing will be the head, which will be my 'improved' version of the 'S-Works' one and with a 10.4:1 C.R. The cam will be accurately timed-in, a duplex timing chain fitted and the capacity will be 1330 cc. All other 'wear items/components' inside the engine will be renewed. The cam followers, by the way, were in rteally poos condition and that's something I've not seen for a long time. 1999 Rover qualty control (or lack of it!).Off to Mini Spares to get a car full of engine bits in a few minutes time.

Yuk - an injected S - can't just dial it down for the emission MOT!

Or find place that look the other way!
