Does 2 go into F1?
Discussion
Renault boss Flavio Briatore has urged Formula 1 to follow GP2's example and introduce shorter races and reversed grids.
In an interview with the BBC, Briatore blasted the 'dull' nature of modern grand prix racing.
"We've never done anything for the show," he said.
"I believe our races are boring normally.
"For me, one hour and 30 minutes is too long because in 90% of the cases the last 30 minutes is boring - very, very boring.
"Every time there's excitement it's because something happens outside - heavy rain, some accident or something like that.
"I still don't understand why we don't try to make excitement in every race."
Briatore believes F1 should adopt the GP2 format of having two races of different lengths, with the top eight finishers in race one lining up in reverse order for race two.
"Maybe have one race of 45 minutes and one race of one hour, with a reverse grid in the second race like we do in GP2," he said.
"In GP2 it's working.
"People want to see people overtaking and fighting.
"If you put a quick driver behind, the quick drivers start overtaking, surely?"
The flamboyant Italian also advocates GP2's pit stop format, where tyres are changed but refuelling is not permitted.
"If you (just) change the tyres, you see the competition between the teams because you change in three, four seconds," said Briatore.
"Now it's seven seconds because of (waiting for) the fuelling and changing the tyres is not as spectacular any more."

Personally, I quite like the idea, and I have watched/followed F1 for some 30 odd years.
I agree 100% about dropping refuelling and stick to mega fast pitstops for wheel changes, though it would spice things up more if only one guy per wheel was allowed.
Just think, with the race split into two, ITV could never force adverts into the race ever again
Why you may ask?
Think about it, do you see adverts during the first or second half of a football match... NO. So they could not get away with doing it for the race could they...
The more me thinks about this, the better it gets...

Renault, the reigning Constructors champion and recent double drivers champions aren't winning this year or look like winning this year or next, so Flav wants to change things to his advantage by reversing the grid instead of trying to get his cars to go faster. Yes Flav of course. And boring? He's a jumper salesman he's never had anything to do with motor racing before becoming the team manager with Benetton. He's never been interested in the sport and that's something he has himself said.

Cynical or not, what he said is right. Modern F1 races are boring, as is refuelling during pit stops.
However, I am not in support of reversed grids. I don't see the point of fast drivers and teams being penalised for doing what they're supposed to do - go fast.
Splitting the races into something like: 30 minutes sprint (no prescribed tyre change) and then an 1 hour feature (with one prescribed tyre change), I can live with that.
why can they not realise that the car is fundamental to allthat is currently wrong with F1 these days?
they can not revert to old technology because they lose face though so they have to revert to turning it into some kind of mickey mouse format to try and generate some excitement. no traction control, no onboard electronics, standard wings front and rear for all, nice big engines with lots of torque, cable throttle, H pattern gearboxes and slick tyres, big gaps between the points and longer races.... right, form two queues, one for the men and one for the boys....

I like F1 just the way it is...
If I want to see wheel-banging, I'll watch BTCC or the Clio Cup
If I want longer races, I'll watch the reinvigorated GT Series
If I want open-wheelers racing a sprint then a feaure race, I'll watch A1 GP
If I want H-Pattern gearboxes and generic chassis, I'll watch CART
The list goes on and on and on and on. I don't know why there's this need to change Formula 1, when you can get all the stuff people whinge about in other series.
It's quite simple gentlemen - vote with your feet - watch something else!

i'd be happy with 2 races, dont even mind the reverse grid too much. cars need to be able to flollow closely so they can overtake at a given moment, so less aero and slicks, i feel, would be the ay to go. also ban blue flags, no way should anyone have to move over to be lapped, if youre that good you should get past on your own merit.... then ban ralf, he's sh*te and he knows it....
Don't forget that,as F1 cars have got faster, the races have become shorter by default. They are now at their shortest in history - and many of the tracks are also the shortest ever used for F1 World Championship races.
Up until the mid 1960s they were up to three hours long at time, on circuits that were as long as 13 miles (the Old Nurburgring).
The show has been shortened to suit TV and I wouldn't like the races to get any shorter than they are. one hour twenty minutes is really TOO short, to my mind.

They could release some cats onto the circuit......That would spice things up.
Seriously though, it's very hard to see what can be done to spice it up.
Most things I can think of to improve it would also have negative side effects, or
change the sport into something else. And I want to watch F1, not Touring cars or whatever.
Just making the circuits so that the road layout allows more overtaking chances
seems like the best bet.
Rain always spices a race up, so maybe a few more races where it's more likely to rain???

Er... it's on the calender this year.
Yeah, I realised that it didn't read as I meant to read just as I pressed submit. But was too lazy to go through the massive effort of editing it to make it make proper sense.
How about 'More races like Spa please!'?
My thoughts would be to have 2 sets of points.....up to 1-22 points for qualifying....but then a similar set of points for winning the race....
However your starting grid position in totally reversed, so to gain maximum points you would have to qualify first then overtake everyone to win the race.
Be more fun to watch!
