Hi all,

I'm now the proud owner of a 1979 Taimar requiring restoring. The original (?) blue with cream stripe paint is badly micro bubbled (all over) so apart from eveything else it will require a strip and respray. The interiors tan leather in very good condition so will be leaving that alone.

What colours do you think suits the Taimar/M series best? Thinking about dark metallic maybe without a stripe. Also any tips on how best to remove the body off the chassis?

Regards
Rob

Welcome to the joys of M-series ownership. Undoubtedly some colours do look better than others, also some work with the interior colour and others don't. My original bought-from-new Taimar was a dark burgundy colour (Ford Black Cherry) with a beige ("oatmeal" interior, and I liked it so much that when I later bought my S3C new it was sprayed the same colour. I would not go for the "model band" which I reckon looks just too 70's these days and most people spray it wrongly, it is not parallel for the last couple of inches at the front but follows the line of the idicators (this is a dead giveaway for a respray). Also if you have the original sunroof you can re-colour it to match the paintwork.

The sunroof is humped so it will be getting replaced as well. The interior on my car is beige/light brown rather than tan (as I described it b4)

Have you got any photos of your car you could post/Email me - sounds like a cracking colour. I'm assuming you have gone with a black sunroof?

Would a dark candy red metal flake be just a bit too "bling"

Pls Email me your address via my profile, and I'll post you copies of the pics of my long lamented Taimar. Avoid candy-apple in my opinion, it's a bu@@er to match and touch-up.

I'd avoid any paint colours that are 'too modern' they just don't look right IMO

I saw an M a couple of years back on here for sale, in the middle of Scotland. It was a deeper blue, maybe a bit like the 90s Griff Mica blue. Interior was a mix of tan leather and black carpets with black door centres. It looked a lot more 'upmarket' and less late 70s than say if it still had a cream band, like mine, and a fully brown interior. I really like the standard mid metallic blue that yours probably is and was toying with getting rid of the band but the job the previous owner did was too good to destroy, it would be sacrilege!. Get some piccies posted! Red looks really good IMHO, see the sold 1600M on here.
Are you going to keep the sunroof? One of my previous posts got a lot of help regarding restoring the vinyl sunroof or blanking over the sunroof. There are a few people who can do either.

I was planning on getting the webasto retrimmed, I have already been down this road with my Scimitar (see profile pic), I took out the old one sent it down to a gent called Peter Harvey who remade it and I replaced the rotten wood in the frame and fitted the rebuilt roof - very fiddly, time consuming and expensive but it looks good.

Here's a pic of the dusty classic:

and the pair
