anybody know much about these engines in terms of reliability and drivability on road. I know a man who has one for sale and has done 2 meetings in it, and he assures me that its a very easy to drive and not too cammy....but he would say this as he's trying to sell it. Hopefully someone out here might be able to shed some light on it?

As an everyday driver nono To get the best out of it you'd need 4.1-3.9 : 1 final drive and with a straight cut drivetrain that means it will be very noisy, reving its nuts off (as they are designed to do on the track). You might get 12-15mpg. It's a race engine at the end of the day.

Running fully mapped ignition miglia motors will run low down, but haven't really got any pull until the engine wakes up. Miglia motors run STR930 which is essentially a modern 649 profile.

The best advice I can give, is unless you really need a motor that will run to 8000+rpm and deliver 130+ bhp from 1293cc, go an alternative route to produce big A-series power (larger displacement/turbo/alternative head etc).

its not an everyday car, but more of a weekend toy. I dont fancy the idea of it revving the nuts of itself all the time. He seemed to think it would be perfect for the road, not to cammy and plent of go and the fact that you would have 140ish horses on tap made it very appealing. Then what about emmissions(another can of worms)? Surely as you said would changing the final drive not calm down the reving of it?

Lengthening the final drive will just mean it takes longer to wake up and start producing the goods. You'll also go through plenty of clutches, slipping the clutch to get the thing to pull away with a long FD.

Emissions? The car will probaly need to be completely re-jetted, as a circuit racer the WOT mixture ratio is most important. In its current form it stands little chance of passing a conventional emissions test - it might be worth a laugh seeing the look on your MOT man's face at the CO output....

I'd be tempted to take my money elsewhere. It's not really the sanest choice.
There again all Mini Drivers I know are nuts anyway hehe

I have a mostly race engien in my mini, and it's a bit of a sod to drive every day as I used to. Wouldn't rev below 3K where it came on cam. Staright cut box and drops which sound great but can be very tireing at any steady speed. Fuel economy when using all the revs (8.5Krpm) was about 10 mpg, sometimes less. So every day, I wouldn't do it again, weekend toy, why not? My other toy revs at 7k at 70 mph, and is about as bad on fuel, but I love it to bits. Horses for courses really.
