Two British drivers taking part in the Gumball rally have been arrested in Macedonia after an alleged hit and run incident which left one man dead and his wife fighting for her life.

The 67-year-old died on his way to hospital and his wife was in a critical condition after a Porsche taking part in the super car race crossed the road and ploughed into their VW Golf.

I can't believe they were stupid enough to leave the scene.

The drivers of the Porsche 911 Turbo Techart which Macedonian TV station A1 named as Nick Morley and Matthew McConville, allegedly got out of their crashed car and ran off, local police said.

The TV station said they later climbed into another car, a BMW, and tried to leave the country. However organisers of the rally said the drivers returned to the scene 20 minutes later.

Passenger Matthew McConville was reportedly released by police after questioning.

Vladimir Chepulyoski was declared dead on arrival at the local hospital, his wife is still in a critical condition.

The Golf which was driving along a road at the town of Struga near the Albanian border was not one of the cars taking part in the race.

Hopefully.

Sorry for the negativity but if you want to race do it on a track.

Certainly wouldn't bother me, I agree, racing should be done on a track. The Gumball is just willy waving.

Have any of you actually gotten close to gumballers during one of these events? Irresponsible show-boating, sleep deprivation, and very obviously inebriation were staples when I met them a couple of times. Some cool cars and nice people but utter tts with the worst I-can-buy-you attitudes ever. I can't believe they have gotten away with this for so long. It wouldn't have been so bad if they had run off the road and killed themselves. It's sad that others have to suffer.

x-posted from SELOC.

Very, very sad. Given that the facts are sketchy then I'm not going to comment on blame. The fact that lives have been lost is enough for me. Condolences to their families. I hope this doesn't tarnish the reputation of English drivers on the continent even more.

Driving to Le Mans etc. will only be under more scrutiny as a result of incidents like this. Time for Gumball to end?

time for reckless behavior to end. i don't have a problem with organized motoring events on public roads--but not "wink, nudge, it's not a race" type of crap. a certain Porsche owner's antics are well-documented in court records and youtube videos--he even posted on here a while ago. sadly this will affect the public's perception of all sports cars and result in more scrutiny on Le Mans-type drives.

Never seen the point of the Gumball, so never taken part. I have seen various films made about it but the SOME of the people taking part would just piss me off too much.

I hope the guilty parties are punished to the fullest extent of their laws.

Thoughts are with the family and praying that the lady pulls through.

I love the Gumball beer

Amazing cars !!! It sounds a bit like sour grapes on here that people are slagging off some of the competitors for having a "better than yow" attitude

there's plenty of arrogant people on this site, but i don't see them getting slagged ?????

It's a shame that innocent people have been killed, but i'm sure the 911 drivers didn't do it on purpose, so it looks like a terrible accident. Terrible accidents happen all the time... what about innocent spectators getting killed watching rallye driving, shall we ban that too?
