I guess not knowing the circuit wouldn't help, he didn't seem very smooth at all to me though? Mind you a 2.0 turbo front wheel drive probably isnt the easiest car to be quick and smooth with.
Probably a combination of an unfamiliar car and unfamiliar track. Alonso's driving style is quite aggressive too, he likes to throw his car into turns.
