Hi all,

Just posting a quick question here on behalf of my mother. She picked up a puncture yesterday, that is right in the middle of the contact patch, so would be no problem to repair on a standard tyre, but the chap at the tyre centre told her that you shouldn't repair run-flats. Can you tell me:

1. Is this true.
2. If so, why is this the case.
3. Are there any dangers associated with repair run-flats.

Many thanks in advance,

Andy.

Repairs to runflat tyres is a very grey area....

When they first came out it was a big no no to repair ing the tyre in the event of a punture in the centre tread band.
Then several manufactorers decided it was safe to carry out a repair following the repair guide lines for a starndard tyre.
This has now changed again back to the original statement. It is now NOT safe to drive on a repaired runflat tyre for a prolonged period of time, you can repair the tyre as a absolute temperary measure to get you to you destination but the tyre must be replaced asap.
The reasons given for this are
1,to repair a tyre you have to damage the cords and metal bands which weakens the tyre.
2,If the flat tyre has driven its maximum distance before a repair then there is a high risk of failure after the repair
3,If the flat tyre is driven above the maximum speed guide line for a flat tyre then there is a high risk of failure after a repair.
4,You are unable to see the side wall supports as they are inside the rubber carcaas, therfore you cannot prove that the supports havent been damaged due being driven deflated-They are designed to carry the wieght of the vehicle for X amount of time-all the time they carry the vehicle they are being damaged.

There is only one tyre believed to be repairable and thats made by michelin-not sure which though.
