mega squirt for chimaera
Discussion
Is there a way of using your existing loom in the car for mega squirt or do you need to start fresh? Ive seen some mega squirts that literally just plug in to your existing ecu connector and away you go.
I would be looking at the coilpacks wasted spark model using a crank wheel and sensor. Is this considered to be a DIY (ish) job. I dont mind getting my hands dirty but dont want to start something if its going to be a pain in the arse to finish and meaning my cars off the road for ages.
Any advice on megasquirt gratefully recieved.
Stand to be corrected but think it can be relatively pain free subject to sorting out an alternative idle valve (stepper)... think a Bosch one is supported but the Lucas standard one won't work. Anyone confirm?
I've always wondered about driving manners with the aftermarket ECUs.... can a smooth responsive set up across the range be readily achieved or is part of the deal accepting off idle glitches and lumpy idles as a trade off for mid and top end response etc?

Last time I checked MS didn't support stepper motors, however it does support PWM based idle valves, these are readily available from you're local scrapyard, most BMW's have Bosch ones that work a treat. Theres a bit somewhere about converting a hotwire setup to MS plumbing in a PWM motor. I'll try to find it.
Gary, with fully mappable ECU's controlling the fuelling and timing, you can have your cake and eat it, as it wear.

ETA It would appear that MS can control a stepper www.megamanual.com/ms2/IAC.htm

This is top of my wish list! I put an MBE igintion only ECU in my Westfield to replace the dizzy set up on a vauxhal XE 16v (I had carbs and didn't want to go down the injection route).
With the ECU, the tickover was smooth as you like as opposed to lumpy before, it was more responsive, deffo quicker and I knew that the advance was perfect all the way through the range instead of a seires of compromises. In this day and age, a dizzy with bob weights in it is bleedin' stoneage! I have spoken to Dave Walker (Emerald) and he is quite familiar with RV8s, being able to supply a reasonable base map to get you going. The existing loom can be used, you just need to make an adapter to mate the two differing plugs and sockets and supply a crank trigger wheel - and they're not big bucks. I have found out that e'd be better off using 2 x ford 4 cylinder coil packs as they are infinately more reliable than the Ranger Rover GEMS ones (and a whole lot cheaper). If I can scrape together the pennies over the next few months, this will be my next mod, without a doubt. It absolutley transformed the Westy and you know you can tweak it if you get a wilder cam etc. And as a last Brucie bonus, you get to sack the AFM which is so very restrictive!

This sounds encouraging and I'd prolly be up for doing a parallel conversion on mine too if you fancy sharing knowledge etc... once agin 'though, the same point, does the stepper remain, need replacing with a Bosch idle valve, or get dispensed with altogether (yes please)?
You can do a lot to control the idle off the ignition advance .. i cant rememebr if the MS has active ignition advance to maintain a steady idle for differing loads but you can make it very workable by ramping up the advance at the load sites just below idle revs, and stacking the sites close together say every 100rpm and having the ignition advance increasing as the revs go lower, in effect creating a self-limiting stall advance curve.
As chassis33 says the MS also supports the two wire spring loaded idle control valves.
best person BY FAR to speak to on this is Phil Ringwood (dax tojeiro on here) who wrote alot of code for the MS system and knows it inside out. he builds units to your configuration with uprated drivers so he's well worth a look. He sells his stuff through his business efiextras.
good luck

Am in the process of fitting a mega squirt ECU to my 400 serpentine.
Mods done so far,
1) Removed dizzy and blanked off
2) Fitted toothed wheel to crank pulley
3) Fitted Crank sensor on home made bracket
4) Fitted 2 x ford coil packs
5) Made electrical harness
6) Fitted plenum pressure sensor
7) Fitted air intake air temperature
Other bits,
1) Built twin plenum inlet manifold
2) Shortened trumpets
3) Modified throttle pedal to accept two cables for twin inlets
4) Relocated PAS bottle.
Haven't yet cranked the engine but will let you know how these goes.
Will tune the system using a wide band lamba and the trusty lap top.

Simon, please keep us informed of your progress i want to go Megasqirt i will be going the stock intake 1st with the twin coil packs then later using bike throttle bodies,i dont want to go throttle bodies straight away i feel feeding these units with cool filtered air is going to take some homework(especially with the underbonnet temps these cars have)good luck with that build

Absolutely not. I drove my Omex 700 series equipped Chimaera 450 for the first time in a sprint on Saturday, and although I drove like a complete knob, and the car isn't properly finished yet, the engine ran slicker than baby poo. I was deeply impressed with the smoothness & willingness to rev. I'm not sure there's a huge amount more power, but boy, does it want to rev. And it ticks over as neat as a Victorian maiden's parlour.

"Me too", trying to hang on until I can get a sequential Megasquirt system to replace the current OMEX OIL system.
Unfortunately there are thousands of ways to skin a cat (notwithstanding how you clone it in the first place)
You really need to decide what you want an ECU to manage first (and we all have our own ideas..) It is hard enough with the plethora of off-the-shelf ECUS to decide how you want to configure them... This has to be your first step in evaluating 'which ECU' IMHO.
