I want an Ultima GTR badly, but can I afford it?
Discussion
Hello all. I have been watching the Ultima GTR for some time now since 1999. I fell in love with it years ago but reality would set in and realize that I couldn't afford it. Now years later things are a bit different. I live in the United States, I make just over $100k per year USD and I have recently sent an inquiry to the factory on pricing. It just so happens that I got sent back a quote which doesn't sound too bad. At a cost of $50-60k for a decent build, I'm not sure if I can make the jump or should I? I'll be honest, I don't have a whole lot saved since I am have dumped some money into a 1000 horsepower Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 build up that is almost finished and I don't exactly have a garage to build it in yet. That doesn't mean I can't find a garage or rent one for a year or so. So what do you guys think? Is it time for me to make the jump or should I wait til I have more stash?
With the current exchange rate that seems very low ie £25-30k? I'd be amazed if you can build one for that unless you manage to get a 2nd hand kit to finish.
I'm sure others builders will back up that you are realistically looking at £40k for a good spec Ultima and well over £50k for a high spec one.... be worth every penny though and they do have a good resale value.

I was given the quote of a mid-good specced Ultima GTR. All of the basics with a few of the good options. This does include the roll cage by the way
Anyways, I was asking some opinions of you guys. I don't mean to be too personal, but I did throw out a figure of what I make per year. Can I realistically build this car at around 60k - the engine and tranny and still be able to eat? LOL!

Been there. Done that. Bought the t-shirt, next!

I dumped tons of money into my VR-4 but it's nothing compared to what the Ultima has costed me. On the other hand the Ultima is worth something now and I get good offers for it every now and then, the VR-4 was total waste of good money and was worh a tenth of what I had invested in it.
I went into this with at least one of my eyes wide open ( those that know me will appreciate that is the best I can do
) and by that I meen that I never did look at it from a residual point of view. This has worked well for me and has totally eradicted the pain of spending such a vast amount of wedge in the first place and having to deal with the fact that if I ever do sell the car, I will not even get back half of my investment. The right mental attitude is vital, but to answer your question, no, I do not believe it possible to build a decent spec car for less than 100,000 USD.

I think it could be done, but you would have to be quite resourceful and find a descent secondhand engine gearbox ect, you could panel out the car with your own aluminium and buy everthing from rivets to wheels yourself.you also dont have to have every option or upgrade, retrofitting parts at a later date when you can afford them.
anythings possible with a bit of imagination
happy building

cutting some corners and second hand part
i would say 80k us as u have better access to the engines

There is also the issue of VAT that is not payable on the stuff to the USA (but there is shipping costs)
Having said that.... I have about 125K in mine and I didnt pay any tax. I did however use custom wheels, modified trans, Supercharged LS2, custom interior, a few grand of ICE/radar etc.... ................................ oh...... and exploding rivets.

Did you know that you are living in a parellel universe?
On a seperate note, I saw you on the way up to Stoneleigh but once there, you did not make yourself known to me. Any reason or did we just pass like ships in the night? ( obviously it was daytime and when I say 'ships', I mean 'space ships', big f*ck of fast ones, with guns on )

Maybe next time 'eh?

Only on 'Planet Wayne' could this make any sense

I never thought about building an Ultima GTR over the course of a couple of years. That being said, now I am thinking alot more seriously about this project. Where's my check book?

look forward to it! (tunnel run?..)
I put the car on the dax club stand and had a good look round the show.. I didnt spend to much time looking around the ultima's! was gonna say hello but you was busy chatting.. (unlike you i know..!)

nice to meet the guys i did meet.. maybe chat more next time!
gtw looks awesome btw.. tbh my favourite bit is the sill running down the edge's...nice..
just wondering if i can really be arsed to copy them..

Yeah that's a common theme. My quote was £25k, but I've spent £28k so far and got no wheels, engine, gearbox, electric or interior yet. My revised budget is £55k for a 640bhp sbc, but given the LS7 now, what's another £20k between friends
And I'm also on a lenghty build due to budget constraits - 5 years and counting already

I just re-read my comment and it don't look too good. The problem is not the factory quotes - they are achievable given a good scrounge around. The problem is the goodies list and my lack of financial sense! I mean I had to have the AP brakes and I had to have a roll cage, double skin kit, Intrax dampers, A/C unit, body flash lines removed, etc, etc, etc...
And you know what - I'm so glad I did. I'm patient and if I have to wait till I'm as old as Wayne before its on the road then so be it

Understand what you are saying about it taking a loooooong time to build due to financial constraints. If you don't mind my asking, about how much can you remember putting into the Ultima GTR per year as a means of comparing notes?
