Hello there im a massive fan of the ultima, after chatting to some of you guys at the kit car show i think its time to bite the bullit!
Im wondering what a rough build cost would be to build a turn key car myself? My father an i have almost finished a cobra replica and i think an ultima could be the next project.Any info would be great.

Here's a somewhat out of date spreadsheet that should give you an idea:

Having uummed and aahhed for a long while I finally decided to bite the bullit and order a Can-Am kit in Feb this year, which should be arriving in a few weeks hopefully!

My previous build a Westfield 1800 Zetec SeiW taught me a valuable lesson in budgeting and trawling through magazines, websites and shows to find the best price for your bits & pieces.

I've spent months researching the Ultima and I think realistically I can build my Can-Am for 30-35K. I am not going to relent on quality but will be careful where I purchase the parts from. The spec I am aiming for is Smallblock 550bhp using 6spd Getrag 996 gearbox.

I've found that if you shop around you can build a high quality turnkey car for a reasonable budget. The only downside is that you spend hours & hours searching around to find your parts at the best price.

As my build progresses I will post the overall build cost on my profile to see if I can stick to my predicted budget!!

^ Sorry to be a bubble burster but the spec engine and box alone will cost you eight bags and that means best case scenario, you will have twenty seven left to complete the car and that is including the very resonable amount the factory will ply from your sweaty mitts. I really hope that I am wrong but prepare yourself now, before armagedon is entered into

^ Yeah, and even though I say so myself, you have had MANY bargains along the way haven't you Sean? The best price that I have ever heard of a builder buying direct from the factory for everything bar the motor is 33 bags, and that is with quite a few deals, 400 odd bhp motor and no wing, AND it was a few years ago now. I am not trying to put a downer on things, just trying to enlighten thats all. If any are able to build a well specced car for 35 or less then good on them, power to the people, that is what I say hippy

Just had a reply from American Speed on the price of thier LS7 800hp unit, and to quote:-

The 800 hp supercharged engine is still in the prototype stages now. The inlet manifold must be finished and put into production. It could be a couple months.
This engine will be rather pricey. Somewhere in mid to upper 30K range.

Now I pressume this is in US$ but given the exchange rate, shipping and the dreaded VAT we're talking about 24K for an almost top of range engine. Still wont keep up with Waynes though!!!

Got to agree with Wayne now way with that engine+box you will be on the road for 35k i have detailed acounts for our can-am and we saw 45k before we were on the road which has risen to 50+ over the last couple of years !!!

I'd say defo no less that £50K for good spec vehicle. Of course with AP, Intrax, A/C, Accusump and wing. If one is budgeting anything less for new, Factory supplied parts, I think one is kidding oneself, one would think. wouldn't one, one....one.

Lucky

Let's face it, that's still 'only' £50K for the exclusivity, performance, pride of build etc. Bargain.......I think

To be honest my original estimate was 40-45K, but having delved the web I am confident I can bring this figure down.

I'm planning to buy as little as poss from factory and source as many parts as I can else where.

I've manage to source several bits already at a fraction of the factory cost inc. a mint 996 Getrag gearbox for less than a grand.(the chap I bought it off didn't know what he had!!).

All I can say is I like a challenge, and if it doesn't work out I will be the first to admit defeat!!

good luck as i think we have all found the base unit may be cheap but the bits to fit are not. Many people hae tried but the majority of parts are cheaper from the factory.
